My RX7 is for sale!

Postby mark » Tue Aug 25, 2009 5:26 pm

Well the time has come after almost 2 years of ownership to put my Rex up for sale.

It's a Blue 1999 Mazda RX7 FD Type RS Twin Turbo.

Pics here http://picasaweb.google.com/MarkRussellHill/RX7ForSale#

My biggest problem was what to go for after owning the FTO and the RX7 seemed like a logical choice in terms of performance and styling. It's the same weight as an FTO but with 100bhp more so you get some idea of the acceleration!

I've owned this amazing machine for approx 2 years now and it's been a model of reliability as far as Rx7s go. I did spend about 6 months looking for a good one and the guy who owned it before me was pretty obsessed about it, he really maintained it, polished it and did regular oil and plug changes etc.

It's the Type RS model which was the highest spec with Bilstein dampers and 17'' Magnesium alloys etc. The post 98 models were generally a lot more reliable due to a 16 bit ECU, revised cooling and turbos and increased horsepower hence the reason why I went for one of the last batch made. Mine is late 1999.

I have to say that the running costs have been a lot less than I expected with mineral oil being about half the price of fully syn stuff. (24 quid in Halfords). They consume oil by design as that's one of the characteristics of the Rotary engine. If you drive the car off boost you can actually get good mpg. A recent trip to Waterford and back to North Dublin cost me 60 quid in petrol (E5) which I was well impressed with and I wasn't driving it off boost as we did an RR day. My near stock unmolested FD came in at 287 bhp @6000rpm and approx 302bhp @ 7500rpm :) I was well happy!

The engine was rebuilt just before it came into Ireland about 3 years ago as it was compression tested with 8.5 to 9s all round here by a rotary specialist. The recent dyno report also indicates great engine health (high compression) with very even curves so real piece of mind for the next owner. It has genuine mileage on it as many of these cars can be clocked (77k miles) and this also indicates a rebuild as all Rotary engines need a rebuild around 60k miles or before if they are not looked after.
Aux Gauges for Boost, Water Temp and Oil temp fitted as these are more accurate than the Mazda stock gauges.

It's got a new set of Pirelli P Zero Rossos on the front with 95% good thread and Toyo Proxies T1Rs with about 70 % good thread on the rears. 4 Wheel laser alignment as well.

I've just done an oil change, plug and coolant change (plugs are very easy to get at). The fuel filter was done by previous owner as was diff oil and gearbox oil. The differential and clutch are in good shape as well.

Twin K&N induction kit.
Clear side repeaters

The interior is in great shape with no wear or tear on the seat bolsters, JVC head unit and new speakers installed.

Clifford Alarm system fitted with central locking and proximity sensors.

I've just taxed this for a year (1744cc) on the log book so cheaper than your V6s! The RX7 is also emission exempt with NCT so happy times. NCT is up at the end of September but I've no doubts that it will pass with flying colours.

This car is a serious head turner so be aware of lots of rubber neckers and people asking you questions at petrol stations and kids saying 'wow' a lot!

My RX7 was worth approx 22k, 2 years ago but as the market has changed I think my price is fair. I'm looking for 13500 ovno as it's worth spending a little more on quality especially with an RX7 and you're getting exclusivity as there are not many good examples around.
I think that's everything
PM me with any questions etc,

Cheers, Mark

Saw this car at the recent classic & vintage show in Dublin, and it is a real beaut. Really wish I had the money for an RX7, and this particular car would be my first preference, no doubt.

Best of luck with the sale Mark. Any ideas what next?

Congrats Mark (I think).

Shame you have to sell that Rex though - its a fantastic example - and looks even cleaner (if thats possible) than the FTO that you minded like a baby.

Its amazing the looks and performance that 10-15K will get you these days.

Thanks Shane, yeah, it's all good!
I have to say there's some great value for money out there, see above! I'll miss her but I'm sure she'll go to a good home like the FTO did.

This is one of the cleanest 7's on the road, I'd buy it off you tomorrow if I had the spare cash floating around. Good luck with the sale.

Thanks for all the positivity guys. That's cool about Lee's Missy Enzo. I may go back to an FTO at some point, stranger things have happened!
