hi all,

im just going thru the topics and have seen a few threads bout gettin the timing belt etc done and was just wondering if im being ripped off or not- i rang a mechanic on friday about gettin my fto serviced and getting the timing belt done as its nearly at d 100k mark and he told me dat getting d new belt, platinum plugs and just a general service like changing the oil etc will cost me in around €600 - is this a good price or is he trying to rip me off?? its a 2l mivec

i just had to drop my car into a sparcy aswell today as the alternator decided to pack in on me last nyt and needs to be reconditioned... does anyone have an idea how much dis will set me back??

i have a feeling its goin to b a bad month lmao :(

Well I got my timing belt & Water pump done for €130.00 euro, I bought the part's myself from camskill for €200.00 so that's a total of €330.00 plus I gave the guy who done it €20.00 to buy himself a few drink's because I knew there was so much work involved in it.

However when I was origionally going to get the whole lot done in one I was getting quote of €700.00 to €800.00  my bank balance just didn't have the fund's to fund this & as it was an emergency & I had to get the car fixed quickly I knew I'd have to find another way!

Eventually after my little panic attack once I'd the part's ordered and got I rang around for labour cost's was getting quotes from €300.00 to €500.00. It was only sheer luck I found the guy I did! He now is my new car doctor and I'll never go anywhere else!

All in all to reach my point :smt024 €600.00 sounds ok to have the two job's done! Ring the main dealer & price up the part's! It will make you feel loads better, when I priced all my part's they came to €895.00 so I knew I'd got a good deal!

just remember if you're getting the timing belt done you may as well get the water pump done too... saves time and money in the long run

The inlet manifold has to be removed, to change the plugs. You'd be looking at about 1 hours labour for that. I'd say the T belt job is probably 3 to 4 hours. And then another 1 to2 hours for a general service. Would suggest that you change the alt and p/s belts while you're at it, they are only about €30 for the pair. Depending on the labour rate €600 sounds in the right ball park, maybe a bit expensive. I guess it depends on what the €600 includes, is that just labour?
Just an FYI the spark plug 'port' on the mivec engine is 'keyed' i.e. you need a special socket to remove and tighten the plugs. Make sure your mechanic has a suitable socket or this job could get messy!

thanks a million guys... ill make sure to say it to him aswell bout the water pump... may aswell get it all done at once... just wanted to make sure coz sumtimes a mechanic sees a girl coming and the price doubles... but he seems to be know what he is talking about!!

nah he said the €600 was everything labour and parts and that he would sort me out with another car for a few days while mine was in dere if he needed to order in the timing belt - i might have a look at camskill myself there now and order one and bring it to him it might lower the price a bit but i suppose as he says... its not a 1.3 colt or anything im driving its an fto so d price goes up :L :L :L :L

I hate it when they say that... to a certain extend they're right.. Parts are a little bit more difficult to come by - and might be a little bit dearer in some cases..

But - the difference shouldn't be huge.. pretty much all cars have a similar configuration.. Wheel in each corner - engine, gearbox, brakes, radiator and such.. Of course each make and model has it's own quirks - but if anybody ever quotes you something outlandish and says "Well you've bought an FTO, it's a sports car so it's bound to cost 3-4 times as much to fix as any other car" - get out of there in a hurry. :-)

Hope you get it sorted soon & and at a good price.

€600 is very good for parts and labour, including T belt, plugs and general service.
