Which stepper motor do I need?

Postby darylfto » Tue Sep 21, 2010 7:41 pm

Hi,

I've just bought an FTO with a Knackered stepper motor. I was planning to buy a stepper motor and take it with me when I go to pick up the car and fit it there.

But I've seen three different styles of stepper motor so far.

I take it that the different styles of stepper motor relate to the different models of FTO, but thought I would make sure with you guys before I buy one.

So I have a few questions:

1. What stepper motor do I need for an Import 1995 GPX?

Image

2. Are all the ones with 3 bolts beige/brown in colour?

Camskill only list two steppers, one for 2 litre & one for 1.8.

The brown one you posted looks like mine (GPX) if it's any help...

I can now see that the brown stepper motor also joins with 2 screws, which means either will fit.

So I guess I can use either, and the camskill page has a pic of both brown and black on the FTO stepper motor page and seems to say it will work on all v6 models.

Maybe they were changed with the year of manufacture. Or import vs UK???

Just found this pit of info on FTO stepper motors that indicate that it is by age that they change colour.

The ISC motor can now be seen - older ones have a light brown plastic casing on the back.

1. Does anyone know if they can be interchanged?

2. What year they changed?

One of the smaller pictures shows the old style stepper motor type with the brown/khaki coloured back part and aluminium body.

Just spotted this note on the Camskill website to back the other one up.

I asked camskill if you can intercange between the brown and black stepper motor and what year they changed.

Hi Daryl

Yes you can

They changed about late 97 onwards

Mike

So that clears it up for sure.

Found one in a scrappy for £35 or one from a breaker on ebay for £30 delivered.

How much do you want for it?

Second hand stepper motors are a false economy in my mind, but one new one if you can't verify functionality of a used one. The steppers in the pics above do the same thing and are interchangeable, the black one is fitted to most facelifts.
