Traction Control

Postby Hercules Q. Einstein » Thu Jul 26, 2007 8:16 am

Does a '95 GPX come with Traction Control standard?
I presumed it had but while taking it for a recent blast over the beautiful hilllside roads of Glendalough it felt like T/C was correcting the back end on some of the tighter corners?

Traction control and ABS was optional on the GPX, the one Wildhound bought has it.

Traction control was an option on the FTO - certainly on the GPX. I have seen several GPX's with TC.
If you have traction control you will be able to see an upside down saucer shape behind the intake rear manifold.

ABS was also an option on the FTO.

The GPvR came with an LSD as standard - not TC. The GPvR Aero came with ABS and LSD as standard. I presume there was an option to fit TC but I haven't come across any GPvR's with TC. From what I understand the TC system is a little overzealous on the FTO - and the sensors are prone to getting clogged up (esp at this stage of their lives).

My Bad. I was confused there. Yep I have no TC on my GPvR but I have LSD. I meant LSD was not on the GPX.

Agreed, the traction control is a little too sensitive for a car with sporting intent!
Even coming off roundabouts and flooring it (where there is no real loss of grip) causes the traction control to suddenly cut engine power. The great thing about it is that it can be turned off!

Thats always a great thing about traction control - I prefer the "control your right foot" type of traction control over a nannying system that makes up its own mind.

BTW - If your TC is coming on in a straight line your sensors on the hubs may be clogged - might be useful to clean these and see if theses any difference.

I don't have it on mine, it was on one I was thinking of buying a few weeks ago. The tyres have so much grip and the handling is so tidy, that I like to think I don't need it!

Yeah I switch mine off to be honest, unless it's wet. It's nice to have but not really that big a deal.

If you're wondering whether it's on yours, there should be a little switch/button to the left of your mirror controls labelled TCL.

Sorry to rekindle a thread, but do any FTO's come with ABS as standard?

If not which types have it as optional?

Thankee

And also, while I'm at it, Maud, what is this 'NOI' which you speak of? :)

NOI = No offence intended, I think.

Did facelift models get standard ABS?

My '95 GPX has ABS. I assumed it was standard but I don't actually know.

The TCL was definitely optional, and I assume by extension that the ABS was.

The ABS has saved me a couple of times already but the TC I could definitely live without. It defaults on everytime you start the car which is a bit annoying.

I'd say the ABS and Traction came as an optional package.

ABS was definately optional before the facelift, not sure about after... dunno whether its better to have it or not, you can stop quicker without it, but there's the risk of locking up the wheels on the other hand. Depends on the driver I guess!

The ABS only kicks in if the wheels are locking up!

ABS prevents lock up in the first place, doesn't wait for the wheels to lock up. With ABS the brakes are (very very quickly) on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off etc. With non-ABS its just on all the time when you push the pedal.
