try turning the whole shift knob a little anti-clockwise and see if the button pops up.
It could be that the shift knob isn't tightened on enough. I'd advise taking the assembly apart and seeing if anything's sticking.
Here's how i did mine: (I think!)
stick two small flat screwdrivers or feeler gauges down either side of the shift lock button, this will allow the button to be pulled up and off.
Remove the spring for under the button.
unscrew the white plastic nut that the spring sits on.
make sure the shift knob is securely bolted on, you will need quite a long socket to tighten this nut.
While all the button parts are off the assembly, check that the shift lock mechanism itself isn't causing the problem. press the inner (threaded) rod downwards and move the selector from the P to N position, and then back to P. then try moving the selector from P to N without pushing the rod downwards. If all is as it should be, then it's likely that the shift button itself is causing the problem.
lubricate all the moving parts, Reassemble the gearknob, and screw the white plastic nut in, refit the spring and click in the top button.
I found that adjusting the white nut can cure the sticky button too.
Maybe there was a "How To" done on this before, I couldn't find it though.
