FTO died :(

Postby finers » Mon Apr 12, 2010 4:59 pm

Had rarely any issues with my great fto but i lent her to my friend, who is reasonably and can trust but murphy's law a suppose the night he had her
she completely died.

Here's what happened according to him.

Was driving and all electrics in car died, then car cut out.

Went out the next day, battery totally flat,
She jumped started no problem, electrics stayed on when other leads where connected and when discounted until i put her into gear,

I'm pretty sure the alternator just went as the battery's on a charge over night and she's lives again,

This is new to me, how to check alternator? see does voltage go up on battery when engine is running?
Could a fuse be gone in conjunction to the alternator?

Thanks.
Sean.

Sean, disconnect the negative terminal when the engine is running, if it cuts out, the alternator is at fault. At that stage, you're looking a reconditioning or replacing.

Easiest way to get it out is to remove the driver's side engine mount and jack the engine up and out. Alternatively you can remove it through the wheel arch by removing all the suspension components. 2 bolts iirc and it should come off easily enough.
Currently in my collection:
'98 Toyota Starlet...
'79 Mini Clubman 1380cc ~100BHP (I hope)
'79 BMW 728

Don't say 'died' !!

Thought the engine had blown or belt come off or something!!

Jesus.. I too thought there was dramatics here..

Alternation failure is fixable.. :-)

and atleast with a new unit you shouldn't have to worry about it going "mammary glands upwards direction" again anytime soon.
