I've always been a defeneder of the Gardaí when people badmouth them, mainly because I've had a few positive experiences with them in the past. But that all changed last night. I no longer have any respect for them whatsoever.

Myself, my girlfriend and another friend were attacked last night in the middle of O'Connell Bridge by a vicious group of scumbags for absolutely no reason. These guys had no problem at all punching my girlfriend in the back of the head several times and kicking me in the face while I was on the ground.

The Gardaí turned up and let them all go. Took no statements from us whatsoever and made no arrests. Despite the fact that my friend was bleeding and my face was swolen and there were tons of witnesses, they just told us to go home and make a complaint in Store Street Garda station tomorrow if we felt like it. This is exactly the type of incident that results in someone being stabbed or beaten to death in Dublin every week.

I've never been so disgusted and outraged. I'm actually lost for words. Just another in the ever expanding pile of reasons to get the hell out of this dump I suppose.

Sorry to hear this - the problem in this country is that it seems it is a bigger offence to go a few mile per hour over the speed limit than to rob a shop or attack someone in the street. Really not surprised on the Gardai take on this - I've seen this so many times before that its really not even worth involving them. I've had small run-ins with scumbags and the gardai line has always been that "they have their eye on them for other offences" and its not worth pulling them in for "handbags/petty theft" etc.

Shams annoy the crap out of me, they have very little to contribute to society on the whole. I hate to hear of indiscrimate attacks like this, I hope you and the other people involved aren't too badly injured. What goes around comes around....

Can't understand the guards attitude, they just couldn't be bothered (probably becuase they come across at least one of these incidents in town every half an hour on a Friday night). You should have got their numbers and reported them....

I agree with cj here, as far as i can remember Dublin garda have to wear there numbers on their shoulder epaulette's else where in the country they don't but you can ask them for their name and number, A bit late telling you now and hopefully you'll never need this information in the future.

Cheers for the support lads. We actually had the presence of mind (somehow) to take their numbers and we're heading in to Store Street today to report the whole incident. We'll take it to the ombudsmann if we have to, I'm not gonna let it go. This is the exact reason people are being killed in our city centre every week - because the guards don't give a crap.

My girlfriend reckons their were cameras in the area where it happened which, if true, is fantastic news. I'll let you know how we get on.

Joe Duffy or Gerry Ryan first thing tomorrow morning, they will just love to hear this kind of thing. How and law enforcement officer can act in this manner is crazy. I would take this all the way.

Don't hold your breath with Store Street, they are a load of wank. A building fell on me on O'Connell Street and they didn't give a crap either.

I hate when I hear this kind of thing happening - unfortunately it seems to be all too common nowadays. I don't really go out in town anymore and would never go out anywhere past trinity college late at night - sounds snobbish but I just think the potential for trouble is just too great.

Unfortunately most Garda these days don't seem to have any genuine interest in doing their job properly and as MfFTO said they like the easy targets (e.g. someone doing a few kph over the limit). I lost respect a long time ago and to this day am always suprised to meet a genuine and proactive Garda.

I don't think removing the height restriction helped.

These guys will eventually get their backsides whooped by somebody..but nevertheless that gardai reaction is appaling - and it is one of the reasons I don't really enjoy going out in the big smoke.

what time on friday was it? Were you drunk at all? Theres absolutely no excuse for the scumbags or the gardai behaviour, but I think the gards tend to just treat everyone the same after 10 or 11pm on a weekend night. If you got attacked and you were out drinking your just the same as the attackers, drunk and rowdy, now move on.... etc etc

Bad as the gardai are I cannot imagine them acting like this if a tourist was attacked at midday on o'connell bridge. but if its late at night and the attcked people have been out also, the gardai jusgt don't give a crap, yeah yeah, your drunk, go home and sleep it off... etc etc...
