Hey all

I'm new to this place.. I've always loved fto's so I think its time to get one! Main thing i'd be looking at would be the 2L mivec with manual transmission without crazy miles on the clock and one thats been cared for. What kind of price range am I looking at? prob lookin at 1995 - 1997 year range.
From a quick look around it seems the manual are hard enough to come by and mainly auto/tiptronic can be found.. wats are peoples views on the auto's?? Any pointers or help would be appreciated :D

Hello Hector - welcome to the site..
you're looking in the right place..

An ok condition manual 95 should be priced around 6-7k Id say depending on milage..

If you want a minter minter of a yoke be prepared to pay more - myfeckin sold his for over 8000 but that was immaculate..

The choice of gearbox depends really on the type of drving you do - you should test drive one of each before choosing..

Welcome along.
Keep an eye on carzone, it'll give you a fair idea of what they're making.
Manuals aren't as 'rare' as is often stated in the ads.
I've never driven a tip but by all accounts they're great, it comes down to the type of driving you'll be doing and your own preference.

Either way, I'm sure you'll be delighted when you do make a purchase.
Just drive plenty before you buy.

Welcome to the site, and you’ve made 2 good decisions, firstly to get an FTO, they’re a great car, and second to ask the guys here. I’ve only been on the site a few months and the advice/help has been great, and a very friendly bunch too, and one of the great things about owning an FTO IMO.

I’ve a GS (1.8 ) myself, I’m not long outta college, and with the mileage I do, it didn’t make economic sense (yes, there are still many times I wish I had a Mivec, and its still in the back of my head :twisted: , but its still a great machine, and I love it).

Best advice is be patient and drive a few (Ask Bernard how many he drive before purchasing :shock: :lol: ). I drove a 1.8 Tip, and was a bit disappointed, but the manual I ended up getting in much better. I hear (but haven’t experienced) that the mivec doesn’t suffer as badly with the Tip, so still worth considering.

People here will tell you (from both stories and personal experiences) that is worth spending a bit more on one in good shape. It’s easy to get stuck with one that needs €1-2k to being it up to scratch.

The UK seems to still be an option if you’re up to the extra effort.

Main thing though, is just do it, and get to a meet, you won’t regret it.

And go out there lads, and enjoy yourselves…

Yea forums like these are great endless amount of knowledge and info.. I've got a Mk IV golf gti 1.8T at the mo n the forums for that are v helpful. I brought the golf in from the north, looked around for a while and got an absolute mint car. Couldnt of found better to b honest. So i'll b keeping an eye up north and in the uk again.. Anyone know wat the co2 emissions are for the 2L mivec? I'm guessing easily 200++... :twisted: so for an import i'd be looking at a 32% or 36% VRT? can anyone confirm? TBH i think I'll stick to a manual unless i'm convinced otherwise from the tiptronics here :lol:

CO2 emissions for the FTO are hard to track down, and as far as I know, not offically available, so are put in the highest VRT bracket as you mentioned. I read somewhere 295g/km, but not sure how accurate that is.
