Can you use dot 5 in the fto as the filler says only dot 3 and dot4?

Yes, just undertake a full brake line flush with dot 5 before filling up.

Just to be clear Dot 5 and Dot 5.1 are different fluids. 5.1 complies with (exceeds) the specifications for Dot 3 and 4. Dot 5 I think is silicone based? I'd be inclined to stick with the 4 or 5.1 (I have 5.1 in mine). I can't remember the specifics but there's some good reason not to use 5 I think.

Correct, you can mix 3, 4 and 5.1 but not 5. More info:

Ok thanks guys, i was going to get dot 4 after reading up on dot 5 but might get 5.1 now. Its just my brakes need doing soon and theyre feeling a little spongey so gona change the fluid as well. Are the benefits of 5.1 over 4 worth getting it for, im assuming its more expensive

Not sure to be honest, I changed my fluid the same time I changed to steel braided brake lines, so don't know how much difference either was responsible for.

I think the 5.1 is slightly more expensive, but was a lot harder to come by, even Halfords were down to the last bottle or two.
