Coil pack

Postby walshs3 » Fri Feb 11, 2011 3:50 am

Hi all, have a broken coil pack so need a replacement. Would buying a secondhand one be worth my while or should i buy a new one? See them on camskill http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s9p49499 for approx 150 euro, any other sites or any other reccomendendations?
Secondly is there any reason this could have broken (just below the box part where it enters the engine) or it just general wear and tear, mechanic was saying the spark plug may have been put in incorrectly and may have loosened. Thanks in advance.

Pick this up secondhand - there will be little difference if you get one in decent condition, which most should be. I have never heard of anyone having one of these broken before, so it's definitely rare.

I would agree with your mechanic - whoever replaced the spark plugs last probably did it with the rough touch instead of the care and attention required.

What are the symptoms of your broken coil pack ?

Air pressure coming back up through the hole where the coil pack goes in(actual air escaping),causes a pulsating hissing (air escaping) sound in time with the engne,ie the more you rev, the greater the frequey of the hissing, mechanic was saying he hoped whoever put in the spark plugs last didnt cross thread it. Also seems to lack power so just not driving it for now just in case.

Similar thing happened on my mothers mazda, the plug became airborne and burnt a hole in the bonnet lining and melted some of the wiring loom. Common fault on that 1.6 engine, heard similar stories on mx5 forums.

Hope it gets sorted quickly and easily. Did the mechanic not inspect the plug for cross threading? Or try a different plug?

I seem to remember Clarkson has a similar issue with an MX-5 in Iraq or somewhere similar.

FTO coil packs are usually pretty reliable, you don't often hear of failure. I'm with Colm on the second hand route.

I have plenty lying around going for cheap!! Go secondhand, I have rarely seen these coil packs to give trouble.

Sounds to me like a you are loosing compression due to plug incorrectly installed or broken. I hope for your sake the plug has not broken off leaving the threads in the head. FTO plugs can be a well tight at the best of times.
