Roof Rack for a Surf board

Hi everyone,

Any surfers here? I'm looking for the best way to transport my 8ft board with my FTO without scratching or damaging the roof or paintwork.

I had a Renault Megane previously so didn't really care about the roof. I have a body glove soft roof rack but not sure if I trust it on my FTO's roof!

Don't think so. One of those soft glove thingy's doesn't count

I've got a proper Thule FTO Roof Rack made specially for the FTO. Have carried Windsurfers, Beds, Furniture up there without a problem.



Had a UK member contact me about it recently - he was going to contact Thule directly to see if he could source the FTO kit again.

I'll ping him and see whether he was successful

I wouldn't mind a roof rack with Bike fittings..

Optical - the good thing about these racks is that you don't need to have them on the whole time.

There's only so much cycling I can do on the roads around the house, they're just no fun.

I'll be keeping a keen eye on this thread - added practicality might be a mortal sin for FTO owners, but so be it...

I know they're removable but just think of the inevitable scratches no matter how careful you are.

Derek has a one from thule that holds 2 bikes away from the back bumper, in saying that, you'd have to fit a towbar then...

The only parts that actually touch the roof area on my rack are 4 rubber rectangular pads - these press on the roof. They don't leave any marks that can't be rubbed away with a cloth. Maybe if the rack was left on for months and months they might leave a mark.

The brunt of the force to hold the rack onto the car is actually taken by the special foot pack that connects to the car in behind the rubber strip that is above the window line. There are special little metal lugs down there that the roof rack grips tight against.

Kace, I think I'm speaking for a lot of people when I say your roofrack looks plain wrong. I'm not most people however and think its looks the biz - one of the most practical mods yet! The icing on the cake for me would be a pic with the FTO loaded up with 5 sheets of 8 x 4 shuttering ply and a couple of lengths of 1/2" copper pipe - any building work planned?

Could be cheaper than lowering springs, wouldn't do much for the drag coefficient though.
