Another saturday, another job done

Postby kevinod » Sat Oct 15, 2005 9:35 pm

The car is keeping my Saturdays busy lately... today's project was replacing my passenger side window motor. It worked but at 2 points going up and down it jerked.

The other week on ebay I spotted a (used) replacement for £5stg, so went for it, and it arrived during the week.

Turned out that one of the cogs on the window motor had actually either worn down completely or broken off, so whenever the cog wheel turned and got to this point it didn't catch the window lifting arm so hence the stops.

Not a particularly complex job but a bit awkward, and you need to take off all the door trimming, the speaker and speaker holder, and of course the weather sheet (which means unscrewing the inner door handle).

Next the gotcha, the window arm has a (strong) spring on it, which is held back with the motor. If you take the motor off without jamming the spring besides you could end up with hands being places you really don't want them to be!

First 6 bolts holding the motor/window arms + a small rail to the door, and then 3 screws holding the motor to the window arm, so took those off, slid the motor over to the gap. Jammed the cogs for the window arm in place, took off the first motor, put the second one on. Unfortunately the cogs had slipped a little, and much head scratching later about why the motor wouldn't turn the angle to bolt onto the door, adjusted the motor back few cogs, and then it went on ok.

So now my passenger window goes all the way up and down nice and smoothly! :D Scratch another 'day one' fault!

Nice work Kev, it can be quite difficult working on the door components due to the lack of space.

awkward job alright, seen a episode of wheeler dealers last week when your man replaced two window motors in a saab he suggested putting masking tape on glass and over top of door to keep window up and in place while replacing motors good tip i thought, not much use for fto as no metal frame above glass, keeping on top of the to do list is the way to go otherwise after a while it gets to much and in the end spoils the enjoyment of driving your pj

Thanks guys... saw that episode that he taped up the windows in the Saab too, would have been handy, a bit awkward trying to maneouver the motor + arm and hold the window up at the same time.

Access isn't too bad though if you have the door fully stripped down - speaker hole is very handy!

There is a side impact bar inside the door, and you can put a bit of wood across to that so the window will only go half way down, which is what I ended up doing.
