Oil comsuption

Postby Massimo » Wed Nov 01, 2006 10:12 pm

What's the oil comsuption after 10000 km in your car?
Just checked oil level and it's at min...that means she burns 1kg every 5000 km...to me that's quite high...What do you think? Is that normal?

she has 95000 km in total

1 litre every 5K KMs sounds about right. Depends how you drive it really.

Mine drinks almost nothing after 200,000Km. I use CAstrol MAgnatec. PErhaps it's the type of oil that you use.

Ditto (albeit with lower milage). I wouldn't mind, I've an oil leak on one of the cam seals and the level rarely if ever drops below full! That said, I don't do big milage (maybe 10k kms a year) and change the oil (Magnatec) twice during the same period.

You don't say what model you have. While I have not any experience (yet  ) of the 2l mivec engine, most high revving engines mivec, vtec, vvti, etc type engines use oil, especially during spirited driving.
If you are driving miss daisy then I'd expect little oil consumption.
In any case that level of consumption sounds perfectly ok to me.

1 liter over approx 7000km... I drive like a muppet though.. and I use the Castrol Magnatec GTX stuff as well... no point in driving on cheapo oil...

Mine is a non mivec....GR
I checked better and it's less than 1 liter...i'd say 6-700 ml in 5000 km.
Lots of white smoke from the exhaust, anytime and i usually feel smell of burnt coming from the back when i get out the car.
Coolant is ok and oil temperature is alwys perfect.
Should i worry about it?

The white smoke is likely to be water vapour. Especially is these colder mornings. Condensation builds up in the exhaust as as the exhaust heats up in the morning it evaporates and comes out as steam.. A fair amount of water can actually build up..I've seen cars leave little puddles behind them taking off at the tjunction outside my estate..

The burnt smell is a little strange - possibly check for debree stuck to the outside of your exhaust pipe..

I was once in a car that all of a sudden started smelling like something was on fire inside it..so we barked the car..stepped out.. examined every nook and cranny...eventually we found a small wee plasticbag stuck on the exhaust partially melted..

If there's nothing stuck to it it might warrent a closer examination..

Massimo

The burning smell doesn't sound that great... Check to see if there's anything stuck in the pipe like Muad suggested?

Hope everything's ok? :smt085

As in the smell of burnt oil? If so, you may have an oil leak - I'd be inclined to get under that car to confirm. Is there any spotting on the driveway?

No worries...I look after her :D

Ok...let's say one day i'm in the "the fast and the furious" mood and i drive spirited for a long time...when i get out the car is absolutely perfect...no smoke, no smell, nothing at all...she seems like she's smiling too :D
but if i go for a relaxed spin in town, with lots of short stops, high gears, she start smoking and smell badly...it's not really a burnt smell...it's kind of...like bad combustion... a mix of petrol and burnt
No leak or plastic bags on the exsaust...

If the HG is gone, you should see a mayonnaise like coating inside the filler cap, you'll also use up coolant. Any mechanic can perform a compression test on the engine to determine if the HG is on the way out. To be honest, I wouldn't worry about this until you start seeing symtoms.

Oil is very clean...no yellow gunk on dipstick and i can't see any loss of performance too.
My personal idea is that it could be a big deposit of water in the exsaust...don't know if that justify the smell too.
Could i be right?

If there is a big deposit of water in the exhaust you need to take your baby for a long haul at high revs - get the exhaust glowing hot...then drive more quietly on the way back to ensure a nice gradual cool down :-) alternatively you can have a bit of a roar-fest in your drive and simply sit and rev the engine real hard - if there's a load of water stuck in yer pipe i'll come out the rear..

is it true that they call them "Cats" because they use kitty litter in them to absorb the fumes?
