paint job

Postby andrea » Sun Feb 17, 2008 6:04 pm

Hi every1!!
My name is Andrea and i've just bought an fto...but it's red and i want to get it resprayed in black.I've already asked a crash repairs caldwell but gave me a quote somewhere around €2500-€3000 which i think it's too much. Just wondering if anyone knows a good caldwell that might do it for less..
thanks very much

Hi and welcome Andrea. For a proper respray, you're talking up to 3k, you could of course have it done for a lot less but the quality of the job won't be up to scratch. Gone are the days when you could get a full respray for buttons!

just buy a black FTO instead. Even if you get a respray job for €2k, you'll have a very expensive FTO. The only way I think it's justifiable to spray a car a different colour is if you change it to a colour not normally seen on the car.

Andrea - meet Spaspeck http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=45982#45982.

This guy has the paint you want and is looking to sell. Maybe the guy who was supposed to do his will do you a deal.

And you are still going to have a red engine bay. Get it to a good detailing company and they will give it a good compounding and polish.
Have to say though I am not a big fan of red cars myself.

To do a proper job all glass needs to be removed, lights off, trims off etc.
trying to mask around things is not the way to go. You would also have to strip down the doors and spray the door opening area.

If you want a black FTO that bad then sell the red and buy a black one.

paint job

Postby andrea » Tue Feb 19, 2008 12:16 am

thanks guys for all your advice
the situation is that i have this red fto,not a great red,the car is good, low mileage, manual, but i hate red and there's no way i'm gonna be seen in a red car(no offence anyone :) ).now i'm just looking for some1 to get it re-sprayed for me for about 2k.think it's possible?
i did look for a black one at first but all that were on carzone over the past few months were automatic or over 8k which i cant afford.it's been a long long time since i'm tryin to get an fto and have encountered lots of probs (like insurance) so a paint job is not gonna stop me to havin a dream car
i'll let you know how i got on and any1 that knows someone that can do an ok re-spray for about 2k is still welcome to share - very much appreciated.
Thanks again

Dont scrimp when it comes to paint job, you could end up regretting it. I have seen some spray jobs where you can see the old paint in places where it is impossible to mask properly. This is especially true when changing the colour of the car.
Where are you based by the way?

Just a few pointers.

Make sure to see some of their previous work.
Make sure to ask if they are removing all trims and glass for that price.
Are they going to paint in around the door arch area's
Underside of Bonnet, booth door underside.

Might seem trivial but you would be suprised what might not be painted when the "Job is Complete"

why not just sell the red one for 2.5k and use the rest of the money to buy a nice black one, there's loads out there for 5k

spending 3k to modify a 3k car with the end result being the car is worth the same or less than when you started doesn't make sense to me
