Squeeky right front wheel.

Postby adrian » Wed Jun 25, 2003 9:47 am

Hi all, since yesterday I am getting a wicked squeek (once per rotation) on the right front wheel and mainly in a straight line but mostly when I turn right.
Upon light or heavy braking it goes away. Would this mean I have a caliper pin stuck?? Is it OK to drive it until I get it seen to?

Thanks,

Adrian

Any more news on the gearbox? I just remembered - I was talking to a guy selling an FTO yesterday and he told me he picked up a second hand gearbox from a crowd called jap autospares (somewhere up north direction) for 200 irish pounds - he said it was a year or 2 ago but he couldn't believe you were quoted 1500-2000 to get it sorted.

I think Ciaran once mentioned some place out that direction too...... I'll see if I can remember which guy I was talking to and if I can get some more info on where he got the box.. that's if you need it still

I had the squeak you are describing on my car (mazda 323) ages ago, it turned out it was the brake disc or something. Bit weird as it didnt make the noise while braking, only when the brake pedal wasnt down.

P.S. - Shane, was looking up the emissions laws for the NCT, apparently its based on the laws at the time of first registration. So its not based on the new emissions laws. Whatever the legal emissions were in 1994 for a 1.8 litre car is what it will pass with.

:D

P.P.S - Anyone here in Limerick or nearby?, and knows a decent place to get regular services on an FTO?

ADRIAN:

Hi Shane, everyone.

I am getting the speed sensors in the post hopefully today. Will try that and new leads and then it'll bethe overhaul. The 1500 to 2000 Euro price is for a total re-con of my box...stripped, re-sealed, repumped with upgraded pump, re-clutched ete etc. I have, generally, been told to avoid second hand boxes as you dunno what knick you are getting them in. A used one will cost me about €500 and fitting another €550. So it's not a whole pile cheaper then getting mine re-con'd and aparantly the re-con is the better option. I am stating to get sick of the FTO as the gearbox and the warped disks and the squeeky right front wheel etc. BUT....I have decided to keep it for another year or two and hence do the work on it that needs doing now...rather then getting a manual at the moment.

Keep the chin up kid, all cars have there own little problems some more than others... ford anyone... and as you know i have had my own fair share of problems (Tip Box, 2 Waterpumps failed, Heater matrix failed.) But i still love the FTO its just that it can get annoying and a pain in the ar$e from time to time, but keep the chin up i'm sure it will all come good in the end.

Agreed on this one. The 205 GTI's I had were great cars but christ did the cost me money - the 2nd one had to have a a recond real axle that had to be shipped from the UK. And every week something seemed to break. Boy did I get good at identifying and fixing problems with the GTI's!

I know what you're (adrian) saying though - there have been times when I've thought about just getting something newer, normal and comfy. But the thing is I'm now looking at getting another car (cause Dean is taking mine tomorrow morning) and there ain't nothing out there this side of 25K that I'd like to drive..... except an FTO! And right now, with the house and everything, I just can't spend that kind of money!

Btw, how much would a manual gearbox be?

Adrian,

Iwould nearly bet that your pads are worn down and the wear indicator pin is rubbing off the disk. This is to let you know you need new pads

Yea, I reckon too Rory....especially given the warped Black Diamonds I have. Getting them skimmed soon.

1,500 Sterling with Jiles, plus getting it there, plus getting home, plus getting back to collect it, plus time off work etc etc. I called a few places here but they would not even consider converting it.

Shane, you GR posting this morning is really making me consider a 2L!!

Go do it man - you know you want to - for me the biggest concern would be insurance and as that is not an issue I think it's crazy to pay as a V6 would cost just to drive a 1.8

Btw, how long do you have the black diamonds? I wouldn't be too impressed with them if they're warped - I must drive real easy cause I've had no trouble with my pads and disks - I use tip mode a lot and drop down in gears to slow down.

Have em about 15K miles. Crap I know. It's aparantly cause I sat with my foot on brake in towns etc after harder driving instead of going into "N" or using the handbrake.

My only concern about buying a V6 now is the way that can't really sell my FTO the way it is. If the plug leads and new speed sensors sort it out I'll be sooooo happy and I'll sell it then I reckon.

If a good manual 1997 upwards 2L came along from a garage I'd be in there like a bullet!
