Does your car's performance every amaze you??

Postby soc » Fri Sep 16, 2005 11:58 am

I normally don't drive my cars hard (I know, I know, why by a sporty/fast car if you don't drive it.... that's a discussion for another day). Anyway, I usually save it for what I'd consider correct circumstances (empty road, dry, etc.) but by christ I always get a shock when I do let loose - I suppose you get used to a certain pace and when that dramatically increases you get to experience the new sensations like it's the first time again 8) I remember the FTO used to really amaze me on the motor way cause it was sooooo strong over 50mph. And last night I cut loose on my way home from a meeting that ended late and christ I was scared at times........ I felt sorry for the is200 driver and the guy in (what must have been a standard mkiv gti) as I watched both (after they caught me at a set of traffic lights) scratching their heads and try to figure out what just happened

You should do a couple of 1/4 mile events Shane - my own FTO suprised me at the last 1/4 mile - it was as quick as the many of the turbo cars inc a second faster to 60 than a 225bhp Skoda Octavia vRS - was much quicker than the Civic type R's and every bit as quick as the Teg R's - I didn't think a 6.48sec 0-60 was in the car and it was really the first time I have been able to do full throttle gear changes without scaring the local population so I really learned what was in the car.

I saw the figures alright and was pretty impressed - I started to get a bit :smt022 though and was nearly running down the docks from the office to see if they had any manual FTO's so I had to stop reading...... ah, sure they were the days..... :smt100

Anyway I'm not sure the golf has enough at the top end for 1/4 milers but that could be because of the the flat torque curve over 4500rpm.... I'd be interested to get a drive in a manual gpx to compare... or even get a manual gpx driver to drive mine and compare. But it is ballistic in the midrange

The acceleration still scares me at times.

Only the other day I realised that I don't put my foot all the way wown when I'm accelerating awaw from traffic lights - even when I'm trying to go a bit faster than normal.

I love this car

The turbos have good midrange due to the torque and low down power - the 220BHP scooby I have been driving for the last few months has similar characteristics - but believe it or not I'm pretty sure my GPX would be quicker down the 1/4 mile due to the power to weight ratio (167bhp per 1000kg v 152bhp per 1000kg) and excellent top-end. The scooby would pip the FTO to 60 (better traction) and after that it would be all GPX.

I am like shane there, I don't normally drive hard at all. Never had a speeding ticket and feel "irresponsible " driving well over the speed limit.
But, at times when I need to pass out etc I drop to 3rd and floor it my face goes

The S2000 does 92mph in 3rd so it's quite a feeling when the 9000 RPM kick in.

It like saving the performance to still have a novelty factor there.
