engine overrevving during gear change??

Postby AL » Thu Jan 11, 2007 7:36 pm

have been getting this problem lately, it a little embarrassing, during gear changing the engine tends to shoot up in the revs, and its getting a little annoying especially during city centre driving???

Sounds like somethings amiss the the g-box, have you checked the oil level recently? Any problems grabbing cogs?

Is it when you have the clutch pressed, or when you're releasing it, or when you're pressing it? or do you have a tip, can't remember...

TBH - I know its obvious but if you are running a manual gearbox it could be just that your clutch is on the way out!

Check some of the other bits and pieces just in case - hows your clutch fluid level, and has the fluid ever been renewed? Very long shot but try resetting the ECU in case its doing something odd (disconnect battery for a while).

Another thought, how low down do you have the pedal before the clutch disengages/engages? If its right at the bottom maybe it could do with being adjusted up so you don't run out of pedal when its not fully disengaged...

No it doesnt rev when idle just put a new stepper motor in 2 months ago so i dont think its that. As for the clutch its nearly on the ground when it disengages. And it might be saturday but it is the 13th my aftermarket dials stop working 10 mins ago

Any chance it could be the accelerator peddle or the throttle itself sticking open a bit when you take your foot off it when changing ?

A couple of years ago on a 1.6R Mirage I had a the problem of very late disengagement of the cluch and it caused a little crunching of gears when it got to its worst. The first thing I thought of was a stretched cluch cable, then I realised it had assistance (servo) and like Kevinod said it was low on fluid! The resevoir looked like it was up to the mark, but until you took the top off you could see that "the mark" was only a stain on the inside!!
Filled it up, couple of pumps on the cluch and it was as good as new!
