SPEEDO NOT WORKING

Postby deanow1307 » Tue Oct 20, 2009 9:50 pm

hi people, i am a new FTO owner but not new to Jap imports, love 'em..
My speedo has not worked from day one, it was jumping all over for a day or 2 and now not at all, the best information I have found so far is that its the vehicle speed sensor, sometimes cleaning it can help, I have accessed thespeed sensor and visually all looks well, I've also looked behind the dials and all cables and circuitry again look visually fine

any ideas
dean

thanks

i have found the sensor and it appears fine, just done a diagnostic and it isnt bringing any fault codes up, is there any other suggestions, could it be the speed converter/delimiter faulty, any way of finding out or testing it,

regards

the speedo has started jumping around again, is this as a result of a defective speed sensor? I dont want to end up wasting money on a new speed sensor if it is not the issue. If anyone can spread some light i would be greatful

thanks in advance

Could be a converter chip gone faulty if it has one fitted. Some cars had Kmh to mph converters fitted to them (to suit our speed limits before they changed to kmh) and sometimes those chips can be faulty causing the speedo to jump about. If yours has one fitted it could be that. Other than that not sure what it could be, would have suggested speed sensor but you ruled that out.
If it does have a speedo converter fitted you could take it out, that might solve/rule that out. Just follow the instructions on camskill but do it in reverse to remove it. Click on the picture to enlarge it.

thanks for that, I shall try to eliminate that as the problem, considering the conversion chip is cheaper than the speed sensor I would hope it is that, however, after unplugging the neg on battery to reset the fault codes I have found that fault code 24 is flashing up which I believe equates to the speed sensor. I shall, first thing tomorrow, to remove the chip and see if that helps matters

kind regards

keep you all informed

Remove the air intake pipe. That should be enough.
Is the car a manual or auto?

i have removed the delimiter and it still didnt work so i can rule that out as the problem. i have got a new speedo motor i will try. failing that it must be a sensor. does anybody know the location of the speed censor on an auto? i heard its on the diff. any pics would be great. thank you. also how do you bring up fault codes?

btw if my delimiter is fitted behind the speedo does this mean the car is still limited to 112mph?
