Air Filter question

Postby pergau » Thu Sep 22, 2005 2:32 pm

Can anyone remember what standard fitting air filter came out best in the tests that the UK FTO club did? The link to their test results is busted and I've searched on our site and theirs and I can't find the results. I'm getting her serviced soon and I want to order a few bits.

I'm pretty sure that CJ mentioned it a while ago.

Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, the ITG came out best, its certainly the best value for money (IMO, that test should be taken with a pinch of salt, we've seen different results at rolling road sessions). The HKS is also a good filter with proven gains but is a bit more expensive than the ITG. If you're fitting an aftermarket induction kit, seriously consider putting in some cold air induction piping from the front grill to up to the filter, otherwise, you'll lose out on power due to the fact that the filter is sucking in warm oxygen thin air from the engine bay. While the induction noise may sound good (and in turn give the impression of additional power), you could end up a couple of bhp down from standard.

I could be wrong but I thought it was the HKS filter? Reason I remembered was mine came with a HKS filter. :D Seriously though I think it was the HKS filter.

HKS filter gave 8.5BHP improvement - ITG gave 8BHP improvement.
I have had both on my GPX and the ITG felt and sounded better though.

Having said all that when I went to the last rolling road the ITG only gave a marginal increase of a couple of bhp over the standard filter - may have had something to do with the airflow at the rolling road - may have had somehting to do with a slightly dirty ITG filter. In any case both filters sound way better than standard. Cold air induction is very important for max gains though - I would imagine that UK filter test must have used some kind of cold air induction for those 8/8.5bhp gains.

 to be honest there isn't a *huge* difference between any of them, and you can always try another one in a few months. ITG seems to be pretty popular.

My thinking is that its the ability of the filter to get in cold air is the key. Having said that I haven't experimented with them, but there's nothing stopping you trying one now for a while, and if you don't like it trying a different one later on. You're not going to be suffering from any of them, and I'm sure you'll always find takers for a used air filter, here or ebay.

I had this one (or very similar) on my GR and it sounded amazing.

Very little performance difference between the top 2 filters so just buy the (by far) cheaper one - the ITG. If they were the same price I'd be slightly swayed by the HKS but they're not.

BTW - If buying wiper blades - the best I've used were the PIAA silicon blades.

Thanks for the advice - I've just ordered an ITG filter and a set of PIAA wipers from Camskill.

You won't be disappointed!

Make sure you apply the silicon wipe to the screen (supplied with blades) before you use the new blades. The water runs in beads along the windscreen instead of just sitting on it - way better wet weather vis.
