Someone's watching over me

Postby Bernard » Sun Mar 08, 2009 9:34 pm

I was driving home this evening on the dual carriageway at about 6.30 and there was some hail.
There was some patches of hail on the road ahead and it was a bit slippy so I slowed down.

The hail then stopped and the road ahead looked clear so I thought everything was fine... I was wrong.

A bit further down the road the hail started again and there was about an inch of it on the road.
The car started to spin, I gave it some opposite lock, first one way then the other and eventually came to a stop. I was straddling the white line at 45° facing the oncoming traffic.

I was really lucky not to hit anything or anyone and just as lucky noone hit me.

I pulled into the hard shoulder with the hazards on for a few minutes to calm down.
Gave myself a real scare... mind the hail lads.

Christ, that was lucky Bernard. I can imagine you needed a change of pants after that.
Something small like that can go either way very quick, glad to hear you came out the right side of it.

I bet there was some clenching going on there.

I spun the Lexarse going onto the dual carriageway section of the n2 one morning just after I got it. I made the mistake of driving it like a fwd - and as there's no lsd it just let go..

on this particular section there is 3 lanes one is merging - it had cars in it.. I was in the "slow lane"..(middle lane) - and there was the outside lane which also had cars in it..

Remarkably enough somehow the car stayed in it's lane and the cars that were around me never even batted an eyelid..

Like you though I plonked myself on hard shoulder for a wee moment..

Lucky or what...??!!??

Reminds me of an incident many years ago. was driving my Celica down the M27 in Hampshire. Middle lane, a few cars in front. The one on the inside lane started slowing down, so did the ones in the middle lane in front of me. I thought something was amiss with the car on the inside lane.
I wasn't that interested in rubber necking, so I pulled into the outside lane and put my foot down. As I went past the now slowing traffic, I realised everyone was looking at me..!
Just then I realised why they were all slowing down. A huge lorry wheel was bouncing down the road, straight for my car. No time to think, let alone try to manouvre. The wheel bounced right in front of me, and straight over the roof. last I saw of it, it was heading for a field and off the motorway.
I was coming off the next exit anyway, but a bloke pulled up behind me and came running up to my car. He was amazed I was still alive. Him and his missus were convinced the wheel was going to hit me.
I tried to put on a brave face, and laughed it off, but I was certainly "touching cloth" that day... :D
Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

I'm not sure I made any difference to the outcome TBH, I'm putting it down to luck.
Really thought I was in serious trouble for a while, I'm still amazed noone hit me.

Note to self: buy lottery ticket tomorrow

Geez Berno, there will be no crashing after work or I'll feel at fault!!!
This is not to be repeated!!!

Last Feb on a really bad icy day driving to a meeting I pressed on the accelorator a little to take over a old person driving waaaay to slow. I was going about 20km. Ended up fishtailing all over the place, had to opposite lock 3 times... No more overtaking for me no matter how slow they were going!

Another time driving the ferrari back to Navan I was nearly killed by a truck with a trailer who came around a really tight dangerous bend with nothing on his trailer. He made it around but the trailer drifted around the bend on to my side and the edge was heading straight for my head, was nearly decapitated. Had to swerve into a ditch to avoid him and he never even slowed down. Pulled in where it was safe after that and had a good cry and thanked whoever was looking after me that day....

jesus lad ur a lucky duck!

the only "near miss" i had was when i was overtaking a truck on the way up to mayo and just when i was up near the cab i hit a giant puddle and aquaplaned towards the front wheels of the truck... i dont even know what i did cause it happened so fast but whatever i did i made it out the other end... i swear i drove at like 80km the whole way home and the whole way back to waterford 2 days later!!

Off topic... what ferrari was that laur? did i miss something????

You own a Ferari, Lotus have I missed any out! I'm guessing youv'e got deep pockets. I appreciate you may work hard for your wedge? but why are you bitchin about high insurance costs for your FTO guessing this is chicken feed in comparison to taxing, insuring maintaining a FERRARI! It's made round to go round!

I wouldn't get too excited Gary, the Felicia wasn't exactly Ferarri's finest!
In fact some would argue it's not even a true Ferarri.
