im gonna supercharge

Postby fergal1980 » Thu Jun 10, 2010 5:20 pm

Well ive been following a guy whos supercharging his fto with an eaton supercharger ..also found a guy in the uk whos already done it ans its fairly cheap and gives decent gains around 238 bhp but and heres my but got in touch with another guy whos also supercharging and has posted vids on youtube sent him a msg and this is what he said........In a nutshell we are using an Ogura TX12 supercharger from a Toyota corolla VVTi. It is mounted at the bottom of the engine in place of the air con pump and is run directly off the crank which means less power losses via belts. We fitted an e-manage blue piggyback programmable ECU last year which will control the fueling and ignition while on boost. We have fitted a rising rate fuel pressure reg and CDH 275 injectors which means we can actually push them to the required 360cc/min flow rate for our anticipated boost of 7 psi (recommended max for the 2 L V6 without modified internals and lowered compression). I created a spreadsheet to do all the calcs for pulley sizes etc. which has been useful. Hope this helps,..........to me this seems like a better alternative to the eaton way just wondering what you guys think any advice would be cool :smt003 also they recon it should be around 250 bhp like to see it when it gets RR COS THAT WOULD BE A NICE NUMBER

Yea, both sound good. You'll have to upgrade your brake discs and brake calipers too. You'll need wider tyres and wheels than the standard ones to get grip. Progects like this are always expensive. Best of luck with it. Hope it all works out well for you which one you decide to go for.

It would be a nice project but I would have thought that you get a lot more than just 50 hp max out of it? Is it worth it in the end? As in the risk of something going wrong with such a complicated project just for gains like that?

the cost so far on the eaton supercharger project have only come to around 500 pounds with all the parts so all that leaves is getting brackets made and fitting like i say a few guys have already done this ..as for the other supercharger the ogura i could ask him what they have spent so far he should tell me

Bear in mind if he sees a 50HP increase, that's a 25% jump. That's quite significant.

The main thing though is that the FTO generally lacks torque and a supercharger would probably fix that. On the whole the result would probably be a lot more grunt in all rev ranges with a significant increase in 0-60 times. I'd love to have the time to do it myself!

Stick up a build diary with pictures etc. if you can.

I'd be very interested to see how it turns out and what's involved.

Best of luck with it! :ll

+1

There would be a serious market is someone could offer this as an ''off the shelf'', kit.
I'd rather be hated for what I am,

Torque is a big killer in the FTO, when you sit in the likes of a TDI Golf, (which I hate by the way), the torque they produce will almost pull it away from the FTO in a hill climb. Even though they're horsepower is 150 max. If a s/c would fix that then it would be worth it. Not sure how I see that a s/c would sort it though, my technical skills wouldn't be the greatest. You're essentially only forcing more air into the engine aren't you?

Speaking of build diaries...

This guy seems to be doing just that.

Basically yes. You are forcing more air into engine, that is why supercharging and turbocharging is generally called forced induction. there are various types of superchargers but generally the difference between supercharger and turbo is that supercharger is driven from crank while turbo utilizes exhaust gases. power delivery is also different, supercharger gives more power through the whole range of revs while turbo works well in the upper revs only. both systems have their pros and cons.
But by forcing more air (and fuel) into the engine you are increasing its volumetric efficiency = more power and torque. it is generally accepted that 100 hp from 1 litre n/a engine is more or less the limit (we are not talking race engines here) while when installing turbo 200 hp from 1 litre is quite common and even more more easily achievable.
If I may suggest something, anyone who thinks of increasing the power of the FWD shall install LSD instead of wider tyres etc. The difference is huge, unbelievable. And power is nothing without control.
