Fog lights

Postby Bernard » Thu Mar 19, 2009 2:20 pm

Since I've upgraded to HIDs my fogs are looking very yellow.
I've had a look on camskill and JDMPerformance and found these, they seem a little pricey but I know you get what you pay for.

PIAA BULBS Platinum White Foglamp Bulb H3 Uprated

£35.18

PIAA BULBS Xtreme Force Foglamp Bulb H3 Uprated
http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m39b0s3720p1150
£73.36

PIAA H3 Intense White Bulbs
http://www.jdmperformance.co.uk/item_detail.php?prodID=52685
£ 31.63

PIAA H3 Xtreme White Plus Bulbs
http://www.jdmperformance.co.uk/item_detail.php?prodID=52687
£ 50.60

Ring Ice Blue Bulbs - H3
http://www.jdmperformance.co.uk/item_detail.php?prodID=3954
£ 13.95

I'm leaning towards these: http://www.jdmperformance.co.uk/item_detail.php?prodID=3954
All I really want is to match the colour to the HIDs (6K)

Any suggestions? Should I be looking towards ebay or halfords instead?

Theres tons of these (xenon filled/HID "look") bulbs for sale on ebay at very low prices - you could buy several spare sets for the prices you listed above.

Remember no to go up in wattage as it will fry your fog switch...

and trust me on this..

frying your fog switch sucks! Im still looking for a switch about 10months later..

Not sure what I'll do come NCT time.. Considering removing the fog bulbs and the faulty switch..

Bernard, how often do you you use the fogs for it to be of benefit to you?

I know where you're coming from though, I dislike the 'mixed look' i.e. HIDs and standard bulbs (I'll be taking the front bumper off the RX-8 simply to fit a set of LED parking lights, you can't easily change the bulbs any other way).

I use the fogs whenever I have the lights on, they're correctly aligned so I don't blind anyone.

I find they fill the gap on the road between the car and the start of the headlight beam.
They made a huge difference to night driving (prior to HIDs) since I fitted them.

Here's what it looks like at the moment.

This is one of my pet hates, you sure oncoming traffic isn't dazzled?

HIDs will use lower watts than regular bulbs.

Well, like I said, they fill a gap.
They're focused just a few feet from the car and I don't tend to get flashed.

I'm with CJ on this one Bernard, pisses me off when people use their fog lights when it aint foggy! Something you'd expect from a pre-pubescent saxo driver!
On the subject of the lamps I'd go for the ring ice blue, have you tried your local motorfactor as most of these will give a discount if asked, they'll be greatful of the busisness in these dark times.
At the risk of sounding patronising, I dont think you can, as you say allign a fog light so that it dosen't dazzle oncoming traffic as foglights aren't designed to give a focused light cast.
p.s. those Enkeis look sweet on a black car.

No offence intended. I know where your coming from, looks better with the fogs switched on. But they are called fogs for a reason!
You know where I'm coming from with the saxo comment. How many times have you seen a saxo/corsa delete as appropriate with coloured side/parking lights and fogs on

True, usually during the day though.
What I'm talking about is night driving (particularly before I got the HIDs), standard FTO dipped beams are notoriously bad and the fogs helped.

BTW, I really don't think they dazzle oncoming drivers, will check it out though and either come back smug or apologetic

Pet hate alert..

fog lights are for foggy times only..

Having said that they should match all the same I think.. you probably wont see a great return on investment unless you stay using them the whole time..

5 wrongs don't make a right  persuming the pre facelift cars had their parking lights on, didn't seem bright enough to be fogs?

Weren't you planning on fitting a halo type ring around your fogs like the ones in FTOOC shop, now that would look trick?

Got to go with Bernard on this one, I love my fogs on in the day time. I know where people are coming from with the blinding and I hate that too but when I'm behind a car, I've never been blinded from a car coming towards me.
I reckon they'd look good if you matched them, the fogs do look a bit yellowy in the pic, not as bad as DC2 fog yellow but a tad yellow all the same.

Sorted at last, I bought a set of "white" bulbs, however after fitting there was no noticeable difference to the original bulbs.
I did find these though.

Anyone else thinking of copying Bernard bear in mind all FTOs don't take that size bulb.
