speedo packed in today

Postby djabie » Fri Mar 07, 2008 6:27 pm

Hi all
My speedo packed in today has anyone had this happen before

Q. would it be the speedo unit

Q. what are the chances of the speedo sensor on gearbox going faulty.

I had a delimiter chip fitted about a month ago so it may not be that.
I have checked all the wiring, pushed the dash cluster in so no loose connections.
Hit it a thump etc etc ect lol
Is there anyway of testing the speedo.
Any suggestions i would be grateful cheers.....

I've seen this happening before with delimiter chips, my advice is to disconnect it and see if the problem resolves itself.

Thanks for your help CJ it was the delimiter chip
that was causing the prob.
The chip was only fitted 2 months ago so it was the last thig i thought would cause it. so i ripped it out back to driving in kph
Oh well i will have to buy a new one and see what happens.
Any ideas why these things would stop working.
water?
damp?
electrics
ecu?
Cheers....

Edit
the brand name on mine is KBTV but as i said exactly the same chip
i emailed the seller he said he has never had a problem with them going faulty (they all say that) and to return it after i have checked all connections
All i know is everything was soldered so no loose wires.
bad chip i think i will have to look for a new one

Wires we not shorting by any change. Even if you taped it up well water could cause a short. Was the weather bad on the day it started givin problems.

Better to check everythinkg before we blame the chip. Dry it out well with a hair dryer. Test it again maybe. Possible may be knackered due to water.

what do you mean dry it out why on earth would it get wet i thought these things went behind your clocks so why would it get wet or even damp surely that "dampness" would affect the clocks without a chip if thats the case????

These delimiter coverter chips connect to the wiring at the gearbox on the speed sensor
so if there in the engine bay they get wet thats what happened to mine. even though it was soldered and taped it still got damp and i think shorted out...
Some chips connect behind the clocks and are a lot harder to fit cause you have to mess with the wiring of the ecu

What I would do is using the wiring diagram find out where the speedo sensor wires ard inside the cabin and install the chip there. Should never have a problem again.
