The second coming......

Postby GarLaf » Thu Mar 29, 2007 1:51 pm

My 99 GX arrived last week from Japan. It is absolutely spotless. Grade 4, 50000 kilometers, silver. It came with a pioneer japanese sat nav but it wont work. I think I will just use a portable dvd for hook up to the display. It also has a full serice history.
I got to drive it for the first time on Saturday and I was absolutely blown away. My previous version was a 95 GR which I sold in Jan 05. After driving it for a while I have noticed a few things. The newer 5 speed tip box is a huge improvement on the 4. It always seems to have the power ready no mater what gear you are in and has eliminated the flat spot between 2nd and 3rd. It also seems to be a fair bit more economical than the older one espesially on the motorway. I stripped out the dash to do the KMC gauges and new radio. They seemed to put a lot more quality components into the car as all the plastics and switches seem to be a lot more rugged. My only dissapointment is the brakes which seem to be exactly the same poor quality as the older version. I have owned an Impreza turbo in between and I can honestly say the FTO is better fun. I also bought an RX-8 and the FTO would certainly give it a run for its money. Anyone else gone from classic to facelift?

Yes, me :) http://www.fto-ireland.com/faceliftguide.html

Welcome back to the fold Garlaf, it says a lot about the FTO when you have folks coming back like this. Interesting comments about the 4sp / 5sp Tip box difference - its got me thinking about a 5sp tip conversion!

Agree re the Impreza quote - I drove a turbo WRX for a couple of months between cars and my FTO was def the better car.

I really sorted out my last GPX manual - significantly improved suspension and reduced weight and it would have given my present 350Z a v good run for its money. And that says something about an 8K coupe vs a 35K coupe.

Its VERY hard to beat a well sorted FTO - prob is there are a LOT of tired ones around!
