Instrument cluster swap and odometer

Postby CJ » Thu Nov 02, 2006 9:20 pm

If you swap out the instrument binnacle on the dash, do you inherit the odometer reading from the donor FTO? I'm reasonably sure this is the case, can anyone confirm?

Yip - Your odometer will read as per the donor car.

I'm sure I read somewhere before that the mileage is held in the ECU so I'd have to say yup it would be the same.

We changed the dash binnacle in a VW Polo at home last weekend, turned out it held the reading of the car it came out of, with an extra 25k than our own had.

I know some cars e.g. Ford Focus, have a chip on the gearbox that acts like a backup. Perhaps the FTO has something similar...

Older cars including the FTO with digital readout will have the mileage stored in the odometer. I have check this and the odo does give the mileage of the donor odo on the FTO. Never thought it would be that easy to clock a car I one wanted to.

Well i suppose one would be morally obliged to get the new odo set to the milage the old one is at...

I strongly doubt anybody would do that though...

Reading will be stored in the unit itself, not the car, however if you look up mileage correction on the internet there are companies that can programme in your cars mileage once the new unit is fitted. Costs about 100 euros though.
