Run in with Audi TT

Phew, adrenalin is seriously pumping now....... just had a bit of a 'who's car is faster' with an Audi TT. Coming into work over east link bridge towards dublin docks and (cause I was late and frustrated with the traffic) I ripped up outside lane and over took a few cars including a black Audi TT. I turned right into the docks (to go the back way into east point business park) and the TT follows me. He drives right up my ar$e so I drop to 2nd, pull into outside lane to overtake truck and floor it. He follows, pretty evenly matched until I hit 4.5-5K and then a gap opens up - but with a 90 degree left-hander coming up it's hard on the anchors and drop down to 2nd. I took the bend tight all the way around (staying close to kerb) but TT goes waaay wide. He just couldn't stick to the same line. 200mts and another 90 degree left-hander. Still in second and tight to the kerb all the way around again and then floor it for the 2nd straight. TT goes really wide again - serious understeer. But he gets back pretty close again until we hit 4.5k - this time though I held 2nd until the red-line this time (I don't like doing this and usually change at 6K no matter what) and by the time I change to 3rd he is about 3 - 4 car lenghts back! Sweet.... must have been a 180bhp TT otherwise I'm sure he would have been much faster low-down and I assume they lose quite a lot thanks to having to drag a 4wd system around. I was very suprised how much he understeered. But there was a scary bit....... on the second straight there is a slight left-right kink which at 70mph in dry is tight enough. This time I cut the kink more than ususal and boy am I glad I did..... thanks to the damp / frosty roads the whole car slide sideways. I reckon I slide about 6 feet towards kerb before gripping again..... scary at the time. Glad I had presence of mind to lift off and just hold the line...

How chuffed am I this morning that a 40K Audi TT hadn't the performance to match my 5K FTO! Poor old TT driver must be sick

Good story Shane, pity you didn't see the rear end of the TT to work out whether it as an 180 or a 225.
These kind of things ALWAYS happen to me when the missus in the passenger seat, some fool tries it on and you have to fight not to take the bait. If I do, I get a serious earful, not worth it, is it?

(Note to self: come up with a way of convincing the wife that MIVEC roar is the way forward...)

Good story Shane, pity you didn't see the rear end of the TT to work out whether it as an 180 or a 225.

I'm sure I'll see him around the business park but I would think the 225bh would be more than a match for a GR although obviously not in the handling stakes!!

Tell me about it...... I rarely go over 40mph with my fiance in the car (except when on morotway) and she always seems to equate noise with speed (worse luck) so there's never any chance of letting rip when she is in the car So I can totally understand how frustrating it is when some fool tries it on and you can't floor it! Actually the only reason I haven't got a new exhaust already is cause I'm afraid to get one that's too loud for my fiance and I end up having to drive everywhere at 20mph just to keep the noise down

I had run with an Astra Coupe (a proper coupe not a 3 door hatch) really good crack it was on a windy country road with a little bit of space terrible surface though. I was able to hold him well, but we passed a lad out walking his dog on the foot path at a stupid speed close to my limiter and he looked a bit terrified so i felt guilty and slowed down

Mr Astra was waiting for me in the next town in a fast food place looking out the window and smiling !!

I get stuck on the East Wall Road for 45 minutes every evening. Can you elaborate on your short-cut ? Do you enter the docks at the entance with the train track, or the entrance furthest from the Point Depot ? Where do you go from there to get to East Point ? I reckon if I could get into East Point via the docks, I would save approx 30 minutes on my journey time, by using the exit from East Point onto Alfie Byrne Road.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Eamon,

Sorry for the delay getting back to you on this - I was away with no internet access. If you want to use the shortcut through east point via the docks you need to have a pass to get through security and into east point. But to get in you take a right into the port - can either go right at train tracks or at main entrance - if you go right at train tracks then you need to take the next road left. Follow road towards docks and you'll come to a crossroads (approx 500 mtrs in) - take a left, then immediately left again, down to end of road and hang a right, down to end of road and you'll hit the back entrance to east point.
