how do i make so the brake pads do not touch the disk?

Postby escu_calin » Mon Jul 26, 2010 4:04 pm

well the subject is self explanatory and comes from the scenario
-i jack a wheel of my car and spin the wheel
-i hear the slight noise of pad touching the disk even if pedal is not depressed.

i need to know if i can somehow increase the distance between pad and disk at depressed state.. so my wheel spin touch free.

it`s completely normal mate. it touches the discs coz when you were stopping you pushed brake pedal and pads stays in their position even if you take your foot off the pedal. Remember that there`s no spring or anything like that in caliper to push the pads back. When your wheels (and discs) are spinning during the drive, then pads will go back a small bit them self. Unless you hear scatching when you drive slowly with windows down. Just pu your head over the window and listen, if you can`t hear it - everything is ok.

Completely normal indeed. What you need to avoid is a situation like Wildhound had where his piston siezed and wore the pad down to almost nothing. There was a constant screech/whirr when driving, very high pitched but noticeable and rather annoying.
Currently in my collection:
'98 Toyota Starlet...
'79 Mini Clubman 1380cc ~100BHP (I hope)
'79 BMW 728

noo
i dont hear scratching like mitsu suggested and the caliper stays cold... just the disks get reasonably hot!
i figured after taking apart a set of calipers that the pads can not completely retract form the disk !

thanks guys a lot
