strange lookin thingy

Postby paul2508 » Tue Nov 03, 2009 8:41 pm

just below the steering wheel to the left there is a device with two butons on it with a yellow light on it too,has a slot in it too where it seems you can put some sort of card into it and anytime i start up the car it talks, sounds japenese, is it a tracker or something that was used in japan

It's some sort of old fashioned satnav I think. that's what Martin was saying about his. apparently you put the card in your PC, program in the destination, take the card out then put it into the car.

Yup I have the exact same thing. Its a personalized greeting service from your FTO. The direct translation is something like 'Welcome to your FTO, how may I help you today."

Seriously, its a satnav yes, I checked it up online a while back, you download maps from your pc onto the card and plug it into the slot then. It calls out directions as you go. You prob have a little black thing in the middle of your dash just on the windscreen line too? With a wire leading down inside the dash? Thats giving out the signal for the satnav.

I think its cool, just for the Japanese talking alone. I also found Japanese coins in mine in one of the pockets in the boot and under the front seat, pure novelty! Does yours still have the flare so too?

Ah, the flare is still one of those rarities so. Still lucky enough to have mine.
I looked into getting a translation pack for that satnav but anyone I asked looked at me as if I had 2 heads, didn't help that the staff in any place I went into were younger than the device itself I'd say! They must be from an era just when satnavs were coming out maybe.
I like those little touches from an imported Jap car, makes it more authentic, I still have my Japanese car tax and insurance on the windscreen as well.
Plus my dials which say 'FTO' on one side and 'something else, awd' on the other, totally convinced someone went in and asked for dials and said "I want 'FTO' on one side and, oh, I don't know, something else, 'awd', on the other side". And they took him literally. :D

haha class, as you said all those small touches to jap cars make them more authentic, i saw a dc5 integra before and had the jap reg plate beside his irish one, not original one , alot smaller, but gave it a proper jap car look

I asked for the Jap plates to be shipped with mine but they couldn't, I think when they are shipping it out of the country they have to return the plates or something to the local tax agency, as proof the car is leaving the homeland, not 100% sure on that, but that's what I was told. Would love to have the original plates though. Be a nice touch for a show or something.
Seb did you have a pair of Jap plates made up at some stage? Or was it in Rising Sun I saw a car with Jap plates, fake ones again but looks good.

When I looked up the website it had stuff about satnavs ya, there wasnt anything about toll gate readers, unless there was some part I entered in wrong it was so long ago I cant recall now. But if its for toll why the card reader? And why the buttons? The satnav thing made sense to me as one button would be go back a direction and the other was to go forward a direction (in case you missed one or something). I cant remember the make of mine to check it up now to find the website.

Fair enough, I always thought it was a GPS or satnav, should know by now to listen to the older experienced heads! :D Slightly different to the thing I have, mine looks like an much older version. Also don't have Mitsubishi written on mine, or ets either I dont think, again not 100% sure on that as I cant check it.
So how exactly does it work?

no dont think so, there is a spring loaded button to the side of it,id imagine thats the eject button, one button has a picture of a speaker just like the one in the bottom corner of your pc screen, and the other button has something else.
