Tip box problem?

Postby power » Sat Mar 06, 2010 1:22 pm

hey, been having trouble with what i think could be the tip box. recently when driving if i put the foot down to get it past say 3000 - 3500 revs the car starts jerking rapidly and the rev needle jumping up and down! But if i drive with a light foot it doesn't seem to act up! The engine light has also come on once or twice at random intervals.

After searching the site i thought it could be either stepper motor or ecu, so i reset the ecu twice and cleaned the stepper motor (and also checked the gear box oil). Still no Joy!
This ever happen to anyone? Could a worn gasket on the inlet manifold cause this sort of thing? Or is the tip box jus gone?
Cheers for any help on this

Could be a number of things, need more info to assist.

You've confirmed that the ATF is within the required threshold when hot? (check when in park). When was ATF/filter last changed? Any jerkiness from the box when moving between park/drive/neutral etc? Does the box ECU ever go into limp home mode (flashing N)?

Fuel filter - possibly blocked, consider changing.

Plugs / leads - changed / checked?

Undertake a diagnostic check (search for info) and report back on the outputs from both the engine and 'N' indicator lights.

Cheers CJ, will try the diagnostics and see what it gives me!

When checking the oil i warmed up car then turned off the engine with it in park gear, the oil was about quarter of the way into the hot section of the stick.
Is that the proper way of doing it?

Done the diagnostic test today and got error code 14, which is throttle position sensor!

Where is the sensor located? And is it an easy thing to change? Thanks guys

Can someone sticky the diagnostics thread in the KB? Might make it a bit easier to find when someone asks.

Ok i've fit the new TPS, reset the ecu, and cleaned the air filter and its still Doing it! :x
I'm thinking of changing the fuel filter, but the diagnostics is still giving me faulty TPS. Could the diagnostic be wrong? Could something else be causing it to give out this reading, or do i have 2 faulty sensors?

Doesn't the TPS need to be calibrated before fitting?

yep found a post with Rory saying he used a multi-meter to check a faulty TPS.
Maybe he can confirm which pin on the TPS to put the multi-meter to?

Will look at wiring diagram again and see which pin it is. I pinned it out at the ecu but you can do it at the sensor (smae thing).

I suspect a problem with the torque converter here. Sound like it is faulty under power and that is why the revs are going mad

Does sound like a gearbox/torque converter issue.
Just to confirm,
when you undertook the diagnostic test, does code 14 flash from the N light in relation to the gearbox or code 14 in relation to the engine management light?

I was counting the engine management light, the N was blinking too but i didn't count it.
I didn't realise they were 2 different readings?

HI,

Sorry to lead you astray power,
Just checked the workshop handbook, engine management light is the one ur looking out for.
Check out section's 23-12 and 23-13, in workshop manual, there is an diagnoses procedure in relation to
error code 14.

Engine Management light blinks engine fault codes and the "N" (neutral) light blinks the tip box fault codes.

Well i'm not getting any codes since I reset the ecu at the weekend, but problem is still there unfortunately :(
Is there a way to check if its the torque converter giving me problems?

Power, did you calibrate the TPS? Generally, placing the new on in the same position as the old is enough but sometimes the tolerances can be out. Also, have you checked the wiring to the TPS? The wiring can sometime break where is connects to the plug.

Well i've had the car in the garage the last 2 weeks now and the mechanic has confirmed its not the throttle position sensor! He's checking a few other things and this evening he asked me if I could get a lend of an air flow meter. Anybody have a spare one of these I could borrow for a couple of days? I've already bought two Throttle position sensors, so wanna make sure before I buy another part!
