Biodegradable Engine Oil

Postby dbuckley » Fri May 07, 2010 11:52 am

Hi Lads,

I'm interested to know what are factors that influence you when choosing and engine oil.

I'm also interested to know if anybody has any thoughts on biodegradable engine oils.
With the following assumptions:
1. It's available in all grades.
2. Performance has been proven.
3. It's competitively priced.

Would you put it in your FTO?

Cheers

Present factors that influence me are quality moreso than the cost of it. Obviously I'll shop around for a competitive price but I'd always try to go for a good brand such as Castrol Magnatec.

If there was a bio-degradable engine oil out there that was the same quality, and close to the same price, I'd probably use it. The one thing that I find annoying with changing oil is the disposal of it, getting it to a garage or someone who can put it in their own disposal tank for collection or whatever. I'm not saying that a bio-degradable oil would be a case of just chucking it over a ditch, but maybe the disposal laws would be a bit more leniant so it would make it easier and cheaper for the everyday person to dispose of it and therefore do their own services.
The other factor of it, (and this is mostly from seeing it in NZ where it seemed every car leaked oil!), it would make car parks, and driveways cleaner, as I presume the oil would soak away in time unlike oil mow that seems to be there for an eternity.

To use it though, it would need to be proven to be just as good if not better than the brands I use now, as they have been reliable to now.

Hope that helps a bit.

Wouldn't be a factor for me at all, I bring my filters and used oils for recycling and reckon that's environmentally friendly enough.

Its not a big job to put the old oil onto a few 5l bottles and dispose of them every few months.
