Locking wheel nuts

Postby pergau » Tue Dec 14, 2004 12:30 pm

I have a set of standard FTO alloys and they're fairly pitted and stained so I don't really bother about them. But I had a puncture recently and the guys at the tyre shop thought I was stupid not to have locking wheel nuts on them.

I assumed that they said that in order to sell me a set of locking wheel nuts so I ignored it but now I'm wondering what do other owners do.

Answers on a postcard please.

Personally wouldn't bother with locking nuts for a set of standard wheels - would make sense for a nice set of aftermarket wheels alright. Though in saying that I am living in the nice law abiding city of Limerick at the moment  - I have had guys try and steal my standard alloys in Dublin before but they were in the more Chav friendly PCD of 4 x 100 (suits a variety of small cars from civics to polos) as opposed to the more unusual 5 x 114.3 of the FTO.

Basically - if you've just forked out a grand for a set of bling 17's - then yes. If your talking about a set of bog standard/pitted and kerbed 16's - then no.

MfFTO takes no responsibility for some scummy w@nk robbing your set of pitted and stained standard alloys and using them on his Ford Probe (about the only car they'll fit).

Personally, I think you're mad not to have a set of locking nuts on your alloys. For 30 or 40 quid, you deter shams from trying to pull the wheels off your car, its a pretty cheap and effective security measure.

I've locking nuts on my (now) std 16s. Ok they're not the very best wheels but they still look good IMO! A big step up from my non matching wheels at least!

You need to weigh it up against what it would cost you to replace 4 alloys PLUS 4 tyres. I got a set of Wolfrace locking nuts I think they were for €25, heck of a lot better than several hundred for a new set.

I'm with CJ, I think you'd be mad not to have a set on.

Just a handy wee trick for cleaning your alloy guys, Flash with bleach!

Spray it on and watch the dirt and scum run off! Plus its a hell of a lot cheaper than so called alloy wheel cleaner! :P

Heh, not that, I'm finding it hard to get a day I can wash the car and take pics of it! Not sure I'll get to the weekend coming either but have Christmas week off so might get a chance then.

Have GPX front brake calipers and discs (and hopefully pads in the next couple of days) to put on, will prob take priority over taking pics too but hopefully xmas week it'll all happen.

Sounds viable but would prolonged use not damage the protective coating on the alloy?

No its grand, All you have to do is spray it on, leave it for about 10 - 20 seconds and wash off. You should only need to do it about once a month.

It works really well and it's diluted enough not to damage the wheels. Put it on just before you wash the car. I guarantee you wont believe the results.

Thanks guys, I'll probably invest in a cheap set of locking wheel nuts.

I'll also give the cleaner a go, it can't make them any worse.

I might even try it on the paintwork javascript:emoticon(':)')
