FTO water leak

Postby FTO Bart » Fri Feb 08, 2013 1:11 pm

Hi, I have a 1994 FTO, which has started leaking water from a small black plastic box on the left (passenger side) of the radiator, what is this box for??
Thanks in advance!

I could be mistaken, but that sounds like the box for the air channel. Is it near the ground? Can you upload a couple if pictures?

There shouldn't be water in it. Maybe the leak is coming from elsewhere mate.

I think you are describing the reservoir for the heater matrix. Leak usually comes from the main supply coming through the firewall. The insert in the firewall breaks down over time, but usually is ok unless the pipes are disconnected, which I have found to my peril...

As you can see from my pictures, I have put tape over the hole which has stopped it running out of water within 15mins of me filling it up!

Ignore my comment, I saw passenger side and instantly thought internally...

The water could be leaking onto rather than from the box. Likely culprit would be the washer bottle, which is just above that channel.

Isn't that the carbon filled evaporator tank designed to reduce incidences of unburnt fuel being vented to the atmosphere? If so, its on the LHS on the engine IIRC, I can't remember the correct name (evaporator tank?) Theres also a condenser unit connected to the a/c system that leaks water if the a/cf has been used for a prolonged period, this is normal and is nothing to worry about.

The pictures are looking up from the passengers side front wheel area into the front spoiler area, if it helps the previous owner has put a large air filter in it and taken out the standard one.

I'm pretty sure it's the air channel. I think Stey had a "how to do" thread for installing a cold air induction and he drilled into the side of that box to run the air pipe up to the induction kit.

I think you're right, I'm mixing it up with the fuel vapour charcoal canister, its been a while since I've had my head under an FTO :smt095
