Gearbox(tiptronic) damage

Postby Gerry » Tue Jan 31, 2006 2:15 pm

Hi

Recently bought a 1994 2litre FTO with gearbox(tiptronic) damage.
Was just wondering the price of a second hand gearbox, or the possibility
of getting old one rebuild and the price of this.
Incidently i know where there is a gearbox with hole in the housing, is there a chance this could be aluminum welded, the problem is there is no history on this box.

Hi Gerry

Send a pm to steelroe, he should have a box or two knocking around the place. Whats wrong with the original box by the way? A recon will probably cost more (~€1500) than dropping in a second hand box...

Hope you don't mind me asking - but did you knowingly buy the car with a damaged Tip box?

Just to throw it in there, you might consider a conversion to a manual gearbox? I know some of the guys in the UK have done that.

The worst bit is making sure you drain as much of the ATF as possible, unfortunately it's nearly impossible to drain it all.

And if you split the boot on the ball joint like I did, you can get a replacement from Mitsi or Proton, part no MB176047, and it just presses on.

I will be doing that this weekend and probably doing a write up of that as well

(If I have all my fingers left in this freezing weather :D )
