What's it worth?

Postby Mustang » Tue Aug 09, 2005 5:19 pm

Hypothetical question.....
'94 FTO manual GPX tidy below average mileage, good condition, standard unmodified, etc. Assuming a recent import and not one that's been beaten around Irish roads for years on end.
94's are quite rare, manual mivec's more so.
With this in mind...how much would you say such a car is worth?

Impossible to put a figure on it without seeing the car, getting an exact spec, seeing what needs to be done on it, etc. etc.

For example, adding value would be:
- nice set of alloys
- good service history with recent work done
- low mileage
- tidy interior etc

Things that would hurt value:
- scratches/scrapes on body work
- dents
- things like oil change, belt change, etc. due to be done

Its down to the market, what people think its worth. Can you get the same thing cheaper somewhere else?

On top of it, and NOI, but I don't think its fair to have this type of discussion when there is a car such as this in the for sale section, that a guy is trying to sell.

A car (or anything else) is worth as much as you can get someone to pay for it. Going to extremes, if someone is willing to pay 15k for a 95 GS Tip, then at that moment the car is worth that. If all you could get is €100, then its worth that.

Kev.

I'm lost, are you referring to the for sale section of this site. I don't see any similar cars :?

All I'm asking is, on average, how much do people think such a car is worth?

How about the 2L Tiptronic FTO for sale thread which you yourself posted in? http://www.fto-ireland.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2440

Ok, I misread it, could have sworn it was a tip you were asking about?

Apologies...

Still a dodgy topic but not what I thought it was about.

Not a problem, you really had me confused there :smt017

I disagree! Asking what people think is the typical value of a particular spec and age car in average condition. Whats wrong with that?
The reason I ask it that there are very few of these ('94 GPX manual) available, so very little out there to use as a bench mark. All I want to know is what do people think such a car is worth on average.

Taking a quote from the above referenced thread;

MfFTO wrote
Presuming average mileage for a 95 - say 80K miles - then I would say a GR Tip is worth about 5.5K - 6K

FWIW I'm inclined to broadly agree with him. This is the type of response I was expecting to this thread.

I would have thought a standard low mileage 94 would be down around the 5-5.5k mark with 95s then moving up towards the 6 mark.

Too low ?

Its easy to see there are a lot of cheap FTOs in the country at the moment, but the sad fact is a lot of them are muck.. 100k+ milage and shabby bodywork :?

But the odd one that comes up, say a 95/96 GPX with around the 60~k mark on the clock, well kept (Basically the FTOs that dont look their age) seem to fetch around 7k, give or take a few hundred quid... and a bit more for a manual.

I would think so, yes, but I'm biased cos mines a 94! In all seriousness, a below milage 94 manual GPX in good condition should sell for 6.5k+ given that 95 manuals tend to start at around 7k. My perceived value of a 94 doesn't differ a whole lot from a 95, but theres the usual factors to consider. I'd snap up a low milage 94 in good condition quicker than a 95 with higher milage in similar nick, my own came off the line in Nov 94, a few months doesn't make much of a difference to me. That said, we're a bit of a snobbish nation when it comes to the year of the car we drive, if you can get over that then you'll find theres plenty of good value to be found out there.

if it was in mint conition and had a full service history i'd expect to pay between 6-7k for it, thats just my oppinion :)

At this stage there is very little difference between a 94 and a 96 car - it will really depend on how well they were maintained but if I was looking for a 94 Manual GPX - freshly imported with 60K miles on the clock I would be willing to pay 7.5K for the right car and deduct from that figure anything that needs doing on the car.
