Conversion done but car wont start:(

Postby Aido C » Tue Sep 15, 2009 10:22 am

Ive spent the past few days converting my car to a manual. After all this hard work and everything seeming to go so well the car wont start. There seems to be on power going to the starter motor. All other electrics seem to be working fine. I don't have a clue what the problem is :smt085 :smt102

It may be something to do with the safety system preventing you from starting the car in D or R.

Yea, at first I thought that was the problem too. I played around with that switch but still no joy.

How about running a cable directly from the starter terminal to the positive battery terminal to check. Just turn the car on and then touch the wire to the terminal. This will definitely fire the starter motor.

I have done this and it works a treat as a starter test.

I got the starter working but now there's no power going to the plugs and injectors:( I'm really starting to get sick of it. It's breaking my heart
It must be a bad connection or broken wire somewhere.

I brought the car to a garage today to get it sorted. I'm looking forward having it all finished and back on the road:)

Theres problems with the wiring. It has nothing to do with the conversion really. It would have happened at some stage soon anyway.I hardy touch the wiring harness. I didn't pull it or push it hard. Might have move it a tinny bit at some stage. Theres no pulse going to the injectors or spark plugs. Also the earth on the ECU is live so there seems to be an open live wire touching off an open earth wire:( The insulation seem to be damaged somewhere. I'm not sure what the full story is yet:( I should hear more tomorrow.

I just can't wait to have all this behind me and be back on the road:( It's been off road for a week now between the conversion and this electrical problem.

The bearing overhaul on the gearbox and the manual conversion was a success. It all came together quiet nicely. This is just really bad luck:(

Aido, check the wiring at the ECU in the passenger footwell - I broke into it about 5 years ago to install a MIVEC controller and them removed the unit.I used spade connectors to connect the wiring back together, at the time I ensured that a decent job was done but it possible that one of the spade connectors has worked its way loose.

Yea one had come off but that doesn't seem to be the problem. I should hear more back from the garage tomorrow and hopefully get it back tomorrow too.

Once I had the gearbox back together it only took a few days to convert it. The weather being so nice at the time was a big help since I was doing it on the drive way. I've never done anything like this before so it was a little slow at times (thinking and scratching head time). If I was to do it again, it would be a lot quicker. Was a good experience. I learned a lot in the whole process between the work on the gearbox and the conversion.

I'm still waiting to hear back from the garage. I will probably call up to them in an hour or two.

Fair play Aido, big job to tackle without experience, I'd be well pushed to try something that big, I'd help someone who was doing it for me but I'd only be watching really. Well done!

I'd have no problem doing it with you. Seriously!

It looks like the ecu is fried. Has nothing to do with the conversion so I wouldn't do that to yours

You'd be travelling a hell of a long way though to do it to mine. :)
I think I'd leave the tip though, I like it, if I had a second one though I reckon I'd convert all right, which may happen in time so could be taking you up on that if I dont buy a manual. :)

It doesn't look like it the ECU anymore. He put his own relays in and got the car started last night but today it wouldn't start again:( What the hell is going on? (rhetorical Q)

Aido, have you or the mechanic undertaken a diagnostic to check sensor read outs?

He probably only has the newer diagnostic tools for cars with OBD, might be worth your while contacting him.

OBD is an onboard diagnostics standard that by the time the 3rd version of it came out (OBD II) most manufacturers had adopted it. this means that a single device can plug into most cars and read faults.

The FTO was developed before OBD II came out, and uses a system called MUT II. this (to my knowledge) is specific to Mitsubishi.

You can extract the error codes by grounding one of the pins of the diagnostics plug under the ignition switch.

More details HERE
(apologies if this has been covered somewhere on this site)

Aido, this is the first thing I would do before undertaking further analysis (should have mentioned it yesterday). Manually extracting codes is a very simple process and may help pinpoint the source of the problem.
