Finance Package to Help Car dealers

Postby steelroe » Fri Nov 21, 2008 1:26 pm

I just wonder how long before the almighty Government cave in to the motor trade in relation UK imports.
Last night they introduced this new NCT thing you have to get before you can register an import here.

I am heading over next week again to pick up a VW Jetta for the in laws. Almost a saving of 7K when everything ia taken into account.
And only €150 tax for year.

Rip off Ireland is still alive and well

Yep knew the tax was cheap but I cannot get over the price diff when comparing the models here and in UK.

I think if prices were realistic here then every forecourt in the country would not be full with cars awaiting sale.
Several dealers down my way have gone out of business, and these were well established.
Would it not make sense to reduce pricing to make minimal profit to keep the business ticking over until things improve.

Or even reduce pricing at a loss to free up cashflow. Theres a LOT of motors sitting on used car forecourts that'll NEVER shift at the money dealers are asking for them. Only the smartest are now realising this.

I went shopping for a Nissan Murano and a Mazda CX7 (for the missus - honest) last week.

Prices on two 06 Murano in two Dublin dealers was 22K and 23K.
In Limerick I went to a dealer with an 05 Murano that was looking for 37K and wasn't prepared to move on price - when I pointed out the others for sale through dealers on Carzone for over 10-13K cheaper he said he'd call me back with his lowest price - Needless to say he never called back.

Similar with the CX7 - looked at 08 models in Dublin. The nicest demo I could find was 36K while 3 other not as nice examples were 47-49K.

In general I found the standard of dealers to be absolutely abysmal. The Celtic Tiger had them spoiled - now they're gonna have to actually work to sell cars.

Car dealers, just like estate agents, have had it too easy for too long.

Want to know about rip off Ireland? Where do you think the OMSP for cars used by the revenue comes from?

After my mate got his I priced up an 03 M3 and the OMSP they gave me was 44.5k so they wanted 16k to vrt an 03!!! He only paid 28k + 2k trade-in on his alfa! The dealers are giving over-inflated OMSP's to keep imports expensive to VRT and reduce the available market.

F**k them is what I say

Brother's friend came home from England last night, works over there 4 days a week at the moment... Apparently you can buy a Vectra which used to be about £17k for £6995! Ok, there's a new model due out soon but still!
