Re-wiring a new stereo

Hello everyone,

I have just bought a new white fto 1997 GX. I am trying to install a new sony mp3 player HU to replace the old double din stereo. I had to cut the wires and bought a din convertor and block to do this in Halfords. The only problem is that none of the wire colours correspond to the www.myfto.co.uk wiring guide! I just checked the boot and there is what looks like an amp. If there is an amp will this override the other speaker wire connections? Is there a way to test what wires go to what speakers?

I have a Sony MP3 HU fitted in mine.. wouldnt' have a problem taking it out so you could see how it's wired up. It would be a 3 minute procedure.

We can have a look at that amp as well.

If you're wanting to use the amp we'll need to connect it to the Line-out on your radio - and trace the wires. Shouldn't be much work.

I always like having an escape route for this kinda thing in case I mess it up, i.e. no cutting wires! Got a Mitsi-ISO adapter, so it just connected onto the car wiring loom and went straight into the radio, no wire cutting required.

I know this is a like a 5 year old topic but I'm putting a new stereo in myself only trouble is like IrishPhoenix says the guide's wire colours don't match to my FTO.



I'll figure it out in a few mins when I go back to the car or if not sleep on it and have another look in the morning. Anyone succeeded wiring their own stereo without adaptors?

yes i did.. all i needed was a simple DC Volt/Amper meter, cuter, instant wire bind clips(which bind 2 wires by applying pressure ) and of course the new stereo connection sheet!

all u need is to identify correctly the ground, the permanent positive wire which keeps the stereo in stand by and the +12V from the contact (u find it easy by turning the key while measuring with voltmeter)
Disconnect the negative from battery while mounting wires, but after measuring and marking which to which
bind the identified wires
and from here is a fairytale since the speakers you can identify them with a 1,5 volt battery:) they do a poc noise when put under voltage.

At end all you need to do for checking is to take out the keys, then just before reconnect the negative check with the Amper-meter how much current does the car absorb.. it should be at most 0,1 A (use the 10A multimeter setting since at first contact, the condensers absorb a spike of 10 A ) if is like that you are set , mount the negative and fire up the beast!

generally the speaker wires are colour coded so you'll have a solid colour, then a corresponding wire with a black/grey/white stripe

Its my second time around....I've way more posts than that...

All the power cables are correct, ignition, constant etc.

It's just the stereo wires and they're completely insane, there's 2 different white wires for gods sake!! I have 12 stereo wires and 8 speakers in the FTO, but I'm only using 6, 2 tweeters in the door, 2 main speakers in the door and 2 speakers in the back.

There's a splitter type amp box in the boot which mixes up the colours even more (anyone know what this is for? and what types of FTOs have it or if they all have it?)

I think I'm just going to take it to an auto electrician as there doesn't seem to be a common sense way of figure these speaker wires out.

So I've ripped out the amp in the boot and just re wired all the speakers.

Stay clear of your existing stereo wires.... They're evil
