You know the way if you live in England or somewhere in the EU for 6 months, you can bring a car in and register it without paying for VRT, is it the same system if I bring a car over from New Zealand if I live there for more than 6 months?
I presume I'll have to pay 21% VAT and 10% excess duty tax but might be able to get away with VRT?
Cause that would kick a$$!!

I love my FTO, but not enough to pay an extorcinate amount of money. Just buy something over there there's bound to be dozens of other cars besides the FTO you would love to own. I have a list as long as your arm. If you ever come back you can allways get another FTO.

Oh dont worry I'll always have an FTO, my baby's going into storage waiting for when I come back, she's not budging anywhere!
When I go over first I'm thinking of an old school CRX for starting off just to have something as a run around, cost about a grand, all the FTO's are prefacelift and I want a facelift, so in time I might one and convert it over there, also thinking of GTO, 300ZX, GTR, and a variety of muscle cars.
I was wondering about the VRT in case I wanted to bring a GTR or GTO or something else back as a project car........

I never said there was anything wrong with prefacelift Gary, I just prefer facelift, I'm allowed to prefer one over the other and thats the one I prefer. Same as I prefer Recaro over standard seats, 17" rims over 16" rims, quads to single exhaust, (which I've got a single before you think I'm picking things that I only have on my car).
I rather the way the lights look and the fact that the front is all one big open area instead of 2 smaller ones, its just a personal opinion and I'm sure not everyone has that but then again what type of place would it be if everyone did!

Thats fair enough, wasnt aiming to be insulting or anything, it was the angry face at the end of your post that I was resonding to, yet again proof that emoticons dont always show the true emotion.
No offence intended Gary.

I work continental shifts, It's boring during the day when the missus is at work. I'm thinking of joining the gym again to fill my time more constructively.
p.s. It's good to talk
Have lost interest in tv as I only get to see every other episode of weekly shows. Might have to invest in sky+ as new series of Wheeler Dealers starts on tuesday night and you guessed I'm on nightshift
Oh and the missus claims I'm neglecting her in favour of FTO Ireland.
"Now thats devotion for ya" This is a quote froma well known advert. answers on a postcard as to which one!

nope!
If you are an irish resident you have to register the car here.
eg. my blue FTO english reg and was registered to the english owner. if i drive it but the cars in the name or registered to a uk resident. then i would need to register the car over her

there is an exemption of VRT for people moving to Ireland from another country, there a few provisos:
you can't sell the car for 12 months after importing it.
you must have owned and used the vehicle abroad for 6 months
you can't have imported a car to Ireland in the last 5 years
you can't have just been abroad to study
you have evidence to show that you lived abroad for the required time

But is it not different if you owned the car in England and had it registered there for 6 months or more, at an address you own or are renting, and had proof of that, and then you brought it back here, that you dont pay VRT?

I think the 5 year guideline might apply only to people who have claimed the VRT exemption before, don't know if an import with paid VRT would count, I doubt it would.

Keep us updated with this Martin will you, i have been considering jetting off myself so it might apply some day... Interesting topic too, this is just Irelands policy im presuming? With Masa for example, is this why he doesnt need to pay VRT in Switzerland too?
ps) If your going to do it, make it a muscle car!!

From another forum:
I was living in the UK for a year up until last September and so I wanted to take advantage of the VRT exemption.
Now through laziness etc etc I have had the car in the county since the start of September and didn't go to register it until last week. I had my mind made up to do it last week but then couldn't make it to the VRO so I decided to send in a friend to do it (didn't think they had a hope of doing it for him). I gave him all my documents and the forms which I had filled out and signed. I had been told before that they would take my stuff and consider my case and get back to me but when my friend went in they looked through what I had and ten minutes later out he walked with the job done. They were excellent to deal with and very nice in there and didn't mention looking at the car (which was just as well as I was at the other end of the country with it). The impression my friend got was they are so sick of people chancing their arm they are only glad to be helpful when dealing with a genuine case.
Now for any one who genuinely wants info on getting the exemption here is what they wanted from me.
*P45 from UK job.
*A few payslips for the last 6 months of living in the UK.
*A UK insurance cert to prove the car was used outside the country for 6 months before moving back.
*The ferry ticket to show when the car entered the country.(They were not bothered that I had the car in Ireland for the last 6 months)
*Proof of owning the car for more than 6 months(VLC is enough for this)
*A few bank statements as proof of living in the UK, now this is the only time they wanted anything for further back than the 6months before moving back and I don't think they were too concerned which surprised me as I thought they would be more strict on proving I was a full year living outside the country(which I was)
*Proof of a permanent return to Ireland(this surprised me a bit) They wanted solid proof I had returned as in a payslip or copy of a work contract or returning to college.
I had other stuff also like being on the voting register etc but they were not bothered about that stuff.
I think thats all. If I think of anything else I will add it in
Thanks
Alan
