Rubber size (18x7.5j)

Postby Muad_dib77 » Sat Nov 11, 2006 7:24 pm

Size is everything..

I find myself in the unfortunate position of shopping for a pair of rubbers (again)..

I currently run a 215x35 Toyo proxes on my 18x7.5j alloy.. Several people have informed me that I'd be able to run a wider tyre on there..

I'm thinking 225x40..Am I way off the mark?

What's the comfort like on a 40 profile? I know it's crap with 35 so I'm not going there again.

I'm only replacing a pair at this time as my current rear ones look almost as new...so they'll be going on the front - and the new ones with the higher profile will be going on the front..
(Current front ones are dangerous)

Probably not a good idea to mix tyre width and profiles on the FTO - you shouldn't really need to go to a wider tyre either - 215 is more than adequate - you will likely affect your handling if you run a 215/35 18 on the back and a 225/40 18 on the front - you may find the car a little tailhappy - not ideal for a FWD.

depending on offset of alloy, a 225 x 40 tyre will work

Thanks guys - I realise that it's not ideal to mix sizes & profiles..If the handling does go out the window I will of course change the remaining two - but as it stands they're as new..

I'm going to run the wider tires on the back - to avoid wagging my tail around fun bends..

The 215x35 tires are definately stretched on the 7.5j alloy.

Rob at DTAS hooked me up with a pair of hankook k104. 225x40..

They're awesome - and they look massive in the arches.. Now I just have to go do a bunch or wheelspin so I'll have an excuse to replace the remaining Pair of proxes :-)

It's great to have grip again...car is so much nicer when I can steer :?

(One of the replaced tires was worn thru the mesh..I kid you not!!)

:smt104 You should be ashamed of yourself! Was the tracking seriously off or something?

I am ashamed of myself.. It was quite dangerous and seriously stupid..however I must said that the proxes are definately one of those tires that just seem to disappear once it starts wearing.. It goes from being good to completely gone within 2 weeks..

Yeah had been knocking about with a very faulty trackrod end for a loong time. Getting the other one replaced next week.
Having said that the wear on the other tire was quite nasty as well - I'm thinking I might have a pretty hefty toe-in.
Another factor would definately be my "drving style" ;-)

Atleast now I've got big comfy tyres on the back :-) They definately add to the look of the car..arches are nice and full - and from the rear the rims don't look skinny any more..
