Rev Counter failing

Postby sinlessgunner » Thu Jun 11, 2009 1:32 pm

Hey all,

The other day was driving the car and the rev counter dropped to 0 and went back up and now it's happening intermittently. Anyone have any idea what might be the cause. Also, on another note, how often does a timing belt need changing? Mine was last done at around 125k km and there's 171k km on it now. Should I be looking into getting it done?

Thanks!

Stepper motor is the usual culprit..
Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Did engines rev fall with the rev counter? If not, then it could be a faulty spindle or speed de-restrictor. If yes, its the stepper motor (search) as per gfalls.

Definitly not the stepper motor only fitted a new one about 8 months ago. The engine was fine too it seems to be the spindle (i don't have a de-limiter). How would I go about fixing that??

Oh and thanks CJ for the timing belt info, bit of life in it yet :)

1. Remove the instrument cluster from teh dash and ensure the plugs at the rear are tight in place. Clean up the copper contacts on the rear with a small eraser (see thread re OCD ;))
2. If this doesn't solve it, then the spindle isn't seated correctly. If you've aftermarket dials, this is likely the root cause cause. Handle the spindle with care, try and see if its loose. If so, push it in gently. If you get the impression that its pushed in too far, get a fork from the kitchen and prise the needle cup out ever so slightly.
3. If you're still having a problem then it could be a sensor of some description - undertake a diagnostic (search).

wouldn't be a dodgy ignition fail sensor?
