cv boots

Postby paul2508 » Wed Aug 04, 2010 7:19 pm

since i had the car, i have noticed this clicking rubbing noise when i slightly turn the car when pulling off., i know its not the wheels rubbing as i said, even when i turn the wheel slightly it happens, its doing my head in, i have looked through the threads and im thinking the cv boot is the culprit.
im looking to get this sorted. can someone tell me ,is there is one on each side of the car and is there inner and outer ??
just want this confirmed as i want to do the lot so my mind will be at rest. hate hearing that noise ,it attracts alot of bad attention on a busy street.
cheers

The outer ones are where driveshafts meet the hub at the wheels on both sides of the car. The inner ones are where the driveshafts meet the gearbox so there is one each side of the gearbox. If your getting a grinding/clicking noise then the joints might need replacing, not ony the booths. You will have to check the bearings. The outer ones are the more common to go because of the way the move.

easy to check, turn the wheels to max and start driving SLOWLY if you hear click, click, click, cv joint is done. shouldn't hear anything when driving in straight line though, unless it is really bad.

that is the thing. do not forget to put graphite grease inside the cv boot. I think it is in this silver bag. (good 2 spoonfulls minimum). If I were you I would change them on both wheels. female dog to take the old ones from the driveshaft and wheel but easy to put new ones. To check for torn cv boot just remove the wheel and check the boot (it is the rubber part right behind the wheel ). From what you described the cv joint is done. Fasten the cv boot around joint with proper metal jubilee clips, as included in the set. DO NOT USE this funny plactic straps. I was shocked when I saw them on one car cv boot. Some people do most peculiar things to their cars :) It was also first time here in Ireland when I saw rusted oil check bayonet :). I was surprised that the engine still worked! it was as dry as Sahara, not a drop of oil in it!!

I have to disagree. That is the right one Paul, outer cv joint. Escu_calin,have a look at it again.

OK here you go:
1. remove front wheels from your car
2. find the driveshaft (it is the rod connecting the gearbox to the wheels it will have rubber boots on each end)
3. check the boots for tear (in 99 % any damage happens to the boots (and joints) connected to the wheels (outer boots), )
4. if all the boots are ok, (rubber not torn) purchase 2 yokes that you put the link to in your post (these are outer cv joints that are damaged in your car, note the cv joint can be damaged despite boot being tear free). Just to be on a safe side you can always ring these nice people at Camskills and double check with them if that is the proper part you require, although I am 100% sure that the link you put is what you need.
4a. If any other boots are torn, (gearbox to driveshaft, happens sometimes but it is much much less likely than damage to the outer boots) purchase these as well. you can get ist at camskills
http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s12p1299
or in case the transmission joint is gone
http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... 0s12p15070
but from what you described it is the outer cj joint that is gone.
5. replace all damaged parts (outer cv joint is much easier to replace than transmission joint, be careful while removing transmission joint, there is a rubber washer there that is easy to damage while removing the joint, refer to workshop manual part 2 in download section).
6. pat yourself on the shoulder and enjoy your ride.

Hope it helps

For the record the correct nut size is 1 1/4" inch. For some reason the nut is an imperial size.
