intake pipe question

i have been looking at pictures of others custom air intake but noticed mine has a box directly behind the air filter (what is this) can i remove this

Looks like the MAF (on phone so can't see to well) you'll need this. Mivecs have this in the plenum from what I remember

Yup, what he said.
There used to be a handy picture of an engine bay that was labelled when you moused over each part, link is dead though.

As mentioned it's the air flow meter.
You cannot remove it without using a standalone ECU.
MIVEC motors do not have this as they run a MAP sensor
