Speakers - What size and make for front door? Suggestions?

Postby IrishPhoenix » Wed Nov 30, 2005 11:08 am

I want to replace the original 30w speakers in the front doors of the car. Went into halfords and got the usual unhelpful response. 16"'s may be to small and the guy there said i may need to get 17" or some kind of mounting adaptor to fit the speakers in. Was looking at the fusion speakers but these may not fit. Any ideas?
You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen, it said 'Parking Fine'.

IP, the door speakers are 16.5cm (6.5in) in diameter. What power (watts) is your head unit putting out? I assume you've not using a seperate amp?

I put a set of 17" Pioneers (on offer from Halfords, can't remember the model) in and they are great - I had to drill new screw holes in the plastic mounting for the original speakers but it's no bother.

I'm sure you guys are talkign about 17cm rather than 17" (" as in inches)..

If you are talkign inches I want to see your speaker mounts!

I've fitted 16.5cm Pioneers in my doors - using the original mounts.. I'd say that it'd be safe to fit upto 17.5cm perhaps even larger.

Got sony 6x9s in the shelf - and am trying to sort something out with my 2x12" chinaman bass units in the back.

Subbelub

Postby Muad_dib77 » Thu Dec 01, 2005 12:39 pm

Nice1 CJ.

I can' treall ymake out from the picture which way you've pointed your large bass-box.

Have you tried both directions?

In my Honda I used to just fold down the rear seats if I felt like bleeding out my ears - can't really do that in the FTO.

I'm considering simply mounting the units on a sheet of MDF behind the rear seats - but haven't actually done anything about it yet. I've had plenty of other things to mess about with.

Well that was my original plan, I replaced the crappy corrugated plastic section between the boot and the back seat with MDF (where the amps and Cap are now located), after I had glued the sub box together, I realised I'd messed up on the dimensions (too big to place on the rear upright section) so the box was screwed to the boot floor, the sub is angled inwards towards the front of the car, it puts out some nice low bass without being too overpowering. Thing is, its a 10" sub out of a Cambridge Soundworks Megaworks system (I was doing it on the cheap!) (I had to go for a smaller sub, otherwise, the volume of the box would have had to be bigger. If I were to do it again, I've go the 12" route...

Sounds alright so that does - wouldn't mind to have a gander at that for "inspiration" if you don't mind..

Not really sure how to stick in the MDF..

Yeah What is up with that corrugated plastic thing..I suppose it does give a degree of protection to the backseat foam..but...Come on!

Its easy - take out back seat. remove plastic, trace the outline on a piece of MDF, cut out the shape, use 2 or 3 screws & bolts to fix new MDF in place. I actually put the MDF in place over the plastic (looking from the rear) to keep that OEM look ;)

Oh alright - that sound simple enough -didn't think that a few screws would keep it stable enough ..but hey..if it works for you I'm sure it'll work for me too.

Do you remember which thickness you used?

Can't remember exactly, it was either 10mm or 12mm.

It's an easy mistake to make I've been telling Mrs Pergau the same sort of thing for years.
