NTL dropped the ball again....

Sold the house and before moving out I called NTL to get our account transferred to the new apartment we'll be renting - no problems they said - will take approx 2 weeks. Fine I said - get a call yesterday to let me know an appointment has been scheduled with an NTL engineer for Friday between 9am and 6pm - wtf, how is that an appointment. No bother I say, just call me 30 mins beforehand. Ok, they say, oh and btw, we don't have broadband in the area.... WTF are you for real - why in christs name could they have not told me 2 weeks ago when I specifically asked!!!

So now I need to find another route to broadband - anyone got any sugestions? AFAIK magnet are in the area - anyone ever used them?

The other possibility is going with someone like Vodafone - maybe getting one of their 3G modems.

What do you guys think? What is everyone else using?

just bought a O2 £G modem yesterday ...


I have vista and thei feck program doesn't want to work with it ..

To test I made a new partition with XP and it works fine, though it seems a bit slow.

But with Vista no way to make it work, so I'll be back to the shop at noon to see if they can do something cause there's no way I'm gonna spend my time swapping from one OS to another as everything is with my Vista but the net is with XP ...

IIRC Magnet only supply intenet (and phone and TV) via fibre, that said, they give you plenty of bandwisth to play with. Personally, I'd give them a go if its an option.

Unfortunately Magnet aren't an option as our apartments are provided by Sky Conway - dunno who these guys are......

I'm really hacked off about this - other options are eircom and bt but I'd have to take a landline with both which I'd rather avoid.

Might have a look at them - haven't heard great things about wireless though.

I think BT are in our area so worst case I'll go with them.

I'm using the O2 wireless which I've borrowed from a mate - only 256k but not too bad to be honest. Going to check out vodafone tomorrow as I think I can get 3G with that...

AFAIK it's an 18 month contract with vodafone and a 5GB monthly allowance.
With O2 and 3 it's a 12 month contract and a 10GB cap.

Oh and try sticking it to a window for better reception, worked for me.

I have Vodafone and I signed a 12 month contract. I find it fine except for between 7 - 8 pm most days. Otherwise very quick.

I had Irish BB years ago too when I lived in Dublin and I found it great, mind you I was living in D4 so probably near to a mast anyway.

I cancelled my order for a BT landline - never use a landline phone so really didn't want to pay extra just for the broadband.

I just need to decide between 3 and Vodafone - both look like they have 3G coverage in Carrickmines. 3 is cheaper but vodafone more established (and my mobile is with them).... hmmm, what to do....

Well does anyone else have experience with 3? I reckon VF would have better coverage. Check both websites for your area and see what kind of coverage both have for carrickmines. If I were you I'd go VF.

Apparently 3 use vodafone masts so the coverage should be the same.

Buy the 3 modem and try it, if it's not up to par change it for the vodafone one...

No first hand experience, but I've been looking at getting mobile broadband and when I asked around a lot of people badmouthed 3.

Personally planning to go for VF.

I have a VF 3G modem and I find the signal patchy (in around Dublin) - it regularly drops down to 2G.

The sales guy in the phone shop seemed to favour VF too and reckoned too many people were signing up for 3 so the network would be clogged - I have a suspicion the kickback might be better from vodafone.
