Close ratio gearbox for FTO

Postby d_dan » Fri May 09, 2008 9:32 am

Ok guys iv been looking at getting a lower FINAL drive, but also I looked into a complete short ratio box. (might be worth throwing in the tech section)

http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.azul.co.jp%2Fcross.htm&langpair=ja%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools

Top Speed in 1 gear = 38.006 MPH
Top Speed in 2 gear = 50.029 MPH
Top Speed in 3 gear = 67.117 MPH
Top Speed in 4 gear = 84.272 MPH
Top Speed in 5 gear = 106.397 MPH

you would have great acceleration with this!

Presuming you good get this to work - you'd probably be living in the mivec zone doing day to day speeds. Hardly good for engine reliability and certainly terrible for economy.

IMO - Not worth it for the few tenths you'd gain on the couple of 1/4 mile sprints a year.

Looking at those numbers I'd be frustrated maxing out at such low speed - but if one could get a 6th gear I'd be a much happier bunny.

With Regards to living in the mivec zone - I think this type of mod potentially calls for a mivec controller that can handle two settings..one for hooning about on the track - and another for day to day driving.

Just found these lads - maybe they know something Dan - give em a buzz..

That post just turned me into a 10 year old again... Imagine that, six gears and a super-power-mode button on the steering wheel. :o Drooool

Heheh yeah - I think that child is in all of us... why else would we have a fun car in the 1st place?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MITSUBISHI-EVO-8- ... dZViewItem

I doubt it would work...but... I'd serously consider it..

*** edit ***
Only just remembered evos are AWD so the output of the gearbox is prolly all different - so even if the bellhousing (I think that's what it's call) was the same - you'd prolly still be up the creek with a stick instead of a paddle.

I know it's not much to go on but having had my gearbox out twice, that LOOKS almost identical apart from the linkages. That just means they're a similar design on the outside, but there's hope...

I worked it out and I'd say I'd acutally loose time on your 1/4 mile grow all the gear changing

In this thread a guy swaps a 6A1x engine gearbox for a 4G15 4 cylinder Colt gearbox.

In closing he states "After this experience I am convinced any fwd gearbox from any 96+ lancer/galant/fto with a 6A or 4G engine should work".

Evos used the 4G63 up until the Evo IX so if he's right it will fit.

anyone know the top speeds and ratio of a cyborg colt. Giving that they are also mivec they could be rather promising. But in the long run ibrecon just the final drive would be sufficient

Try over on Irishmoc.org they might have it they have a few "mivec"s over there I think..

Nope - it would definetly be quicker with the lower ratio box. WRC cars run similar ratios as the one suggested above. You could keep the FTO in the optimum power band throughout the 1/4 mile sprint.

Its just not worth it for refinement and economy reasons.

At that price I'm actually tempted to try the 6 speed Evo box myself just for laughs. I've ot take the box off again to do the clutch anyway... Might drop the Starion plan and try that instead?

Its a tad complicated for me, so if I change the box will I need a defferent flywheel I seen a few referances to the cyborg colt

I wonder would somebody with access to an updated CAPS programme be able to tell us if there's a cross over in fitment?

What do you think?

Yeah I'd definitely have to make sure of the fitment first if anyone knows how to go about it. Also I'm sure there are other things to look like, as Dan mentioned, might need a different flywheel and clutch. Then there's messing with gear linkages and lever and such to make sure it all works.

But I think I'd be willing to try it if I knew it would work! Six speed FTO... that'd just be sweet.

Wouln't that just drop you into 3rd well short of Mivec? The extra gear should allow you to spend more time in the power band.

Sure it is Colm but that's boring. Imagine if they'd said that after the Model T. :P

Agreed.
How much noticeable difference would you get in the 364 days you're not on a track?
It's not like it's a cheap mod...

Ah sure some of us do different things - not all mods are to everybodys taste or desire..

Horses for courses or something to that effect..

Personally I relish the idea of a 6 speed closer ratio gearbox - never mind that I'd only be stretching it's legs once or twice a year..

agh but I'd just have loads of acceleration and a decent cruise just get a ratio that lets u sit as 60mph at 3000 - 4500 Rpm and ur grand

According to the most up to date CAPS

There are 7 diff models of FTO manual transmission. And 45 different variations. And none of them are fitted to any other model.

I reckon it would be very hit and miss to get a box from another mitsi model to fit the FTO V6. Maybe a box from another V6 model.

An EVO box will not fit as it is 4WD.
