Sticky Gear Changes

Postby briencrean » Tue Feb 10, 2009 1:16 am

Hi all,

I recently changed my manual gear oil as 1st and 2nd are quite sticky when the car is cold. The other gears are a lot smoother... apart from reverse

Gear changes are a little better when the car is warm.

I was thinking of trying some other options I saw when searching the forum.

Steelroe mentioned changing the gear linkages and also the cable bracket in a previous post.

Are these hard parts to change as a DIY job?

Thanks

Brien

Yup i wouldnt mind trying a few things, my gears are grand except first can be a bit sticky at times , part from that very smooth,

Thanks finers

Unfortunately that sounds a little out of my depth!

I can live with reverse but I just found this on the www.ftooc.org site:

http://www.ftooc.org/phpbb/viewtopic.ph ... t=gear+box

This looks promising as it sounds like it may fix my problem

Once I get some daylight I'll be examining the bracket holding the selecting cables to the gearbox

more than likely this http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s12p2697

Cheapest option aswell. There are 2 diff ones so you need to supply chassis no. I have changed this on sevberal FTO's with sticky first and second gears, including my own GPX.

YOu could check the condition of the rubber parts on it to see if any are cracked or if there is undue movement in the cable holders.
I had a very similar problem with my GPX (first and second, would normally have to stop completely to go into first) this fixed the problem, box was as good as new after.

I have to stop completely before I go into 1st, is it not normal in ftos? Colm told me all cars should be like that, I suppose it makes sense... annoying as hell though!

At least you have someone to blame if it turns out to be untrue ;)

Its not something I pay a lot of attention to but I'm pretty sure that you can engage first gear in an FTO when on the move (speed dependant obviously).

You cant change if you're going anything really over 10 miles an hour, well unless its a tip in which case you can. Think of the gear box as cogs, the higher the gear the larger the cog and the more further apart the teeth, when you change gear you need a lever to engage in between the teeth (hypothetically), if the cog is moving its harder to hit the teeth. Its easier to change into 3, 4, and 5 when moving, if travelling quick even changing into 2nd can cause a little jump, into first is very hard then.

Finally got some time and daylight to check my gear cable bracket today.

As you can see by the picture the bracket on my FTO looks fine and feels pretty solid. Unfortunately that rules it out as a cause of my problem!

Here is an example of a broken bracket taken from the ftooc DIY section on how to fix a broken bracket.

I would get someone to move the gearstick while you are looking at the linkage. The inside rubbers might be moving, you cannot see these from the pics you posted

Must have a look at that again when there is some daylight.

Would there be a corresponding bracket inside the car also, or could there be a problem with the gear lever mechanism itself?

Forgot to say there are 3-4 rubber washers under the the bracket, one with each bolt, these could also be worn, whake the entire bracket and check for excessive movement

Well I have to say after the service, 1st to 2nd is fine and putting it into first while moving is better, but not fixed.
