Breather filter

Quick Question - Breather filters - what are they and what's the point?
I've seen them on other cars - it looks like a tiny airfilter...

I've never noticed one on my engine - does anybody know where it is - if it's there? (Mivec unit)

I always get a bit nervous when I find out new thing that I haven't checked on the engine..prolly a by-product of blowing one up..
