Lift off oversteer!

Postby optical illusion » Sun Feb 14, 2010 10:26 pm

Never thought it possible or at least extremely unlikely in FWD car, had to eat my words yesterday - it's bloody scary!!! It all happened so fast too, caught it but then, gone again!

Was this in Mondello or on your own private track?

oh yeah, its possible all right (as you now know)
Not something I have experienced in the FTO, but did have several experiences of it in a FWD Alfa 145.
Good times. I remember I thought it was not possible without using a handbrake and then I ate my words one day too on a wet/muddy roundabout. Unplanned and a lesson learned.

Mondello, in Birrane's bends! Came in too fast and unbalanced the car, and it was either brake, turn tight or back off and I chose the latter, in hindsight, back off less the next time! Dab of oppo was applied but caught me on the second lock! Thought I got away with it too till I got the thumbs up from one of the lads who went straight back to the pits to tell everyone :P

Those alfas are divils for doing it alright. Only happened once in the clio but that was on an icy roundabout so all is forgiven!

Had a big moment of lift off oversteer one day driving a Racing Puma I used to own and thats the best handling FWD car I've ever driven - its not a nice experience as its a lot more difficult to control than oversteer in a RWD.

I got caught out with this on a Fiesta Zetec S I got as a trade in, never experienced anything like that with the Fiats and Alfas I'd been used to, If it didn't look so much like a boggo spec Fiesta (it was black) I would've bought it from the garage. Such a great car to drive.

Shows you're getting well used to the old track days though and really pushing to (and past) the limit, fair play.
Don't suppose anyone caught it on video? Purely for educational reasons of course! :P

Fortunately no video footage :) I know what I did wrong though, so I'll learn from that. Track days rock!
