Steel silver with black roof yes/no???

Postby gary d » Fri Jun 05, 2009 11:27 pm

Hi folks, would appreciate your opinions on this one.
The paintwork on my roof is a little scabby and I was planning on getting it resprayed, however Neil at OMA suggested painting the roof and mirrors gloss black. to tie in with this I was thinking of dark anthracite alloys or the standard rims with polished lip and black or anthracite centres. the major advantage of this would be avoiding the difficulty of matching 15 year old paintwork. I have tried searching for images of silver fto's with black roofs with little successs, if anyone knows knows of images they can add to this thread please do.

this features in my 24 month plan.

except I'd go matt black. or maybe a carbon film overlay. this would look great with standard alloys painted dark grey with a polished lip like Grace from the UK owners club did.

would leave the mirrors alone.

Hmm I dunno... get someone to do a photoshop mock up and I'll decide :smt002

I'd leave the mirrors alone myself anyway

note: she doesn't have a black roof, only the nicest standard FTO alloys I've ever seen.

I have seen pics of a car with the roof black on silver(A34), think it was on the ftooc. Cant seem to find it now though. I thought it was nice but not something I'd do myself. The roof and the pillars ( the bits that come down to meet the wings, not sure if thats what you call them) were painted black. It is unusual but it was nice. I think its a matter of personal taste though.
Here's a crude effort of a what it might look like. Ya still need to use your imagination though as its not great.

Down to personal taste, a 'nay' from me though. I'm thinking you'd need more of a contrast to pull it off, e.g. white & black or blue & black, red & black. Silver & black doesn't give the contrast needed imho.

Each to their own of course!

I've seen this done before (steel silver, black roof) and it didn't look quite right - it made the car look 'stubby' or somthing, can't quite put my finger on it. IMO, the FTOs body style doesn't lend itself to NSX roof look....

Think it could look well. Would need a black badge for the front. Maybe paint the spoiler black too.

Just thinking - amyv6fto on ftooc has a green FTO with black roof and a-pillars, must be pics around of it. I'll have a look around for them later.

Still cant find the pictures but I have definately seen it somewhere and it looks nice.

Not sure if its what you mean CJ but I thought it made the car look like a convertable. (from the front anyway) The black blended in with the dark background, looked as though there was no roof there. I didn't like it straight away but the more I looked at it, the more it grew on me.

As no pics of a car like this can be found it would be quite unusual if nothing else. That in itself is appealing (IMHO), as it would be a bit different to the norm. I say go for it, if in the end you dont like it you might be a few quid out but atleast you could always change it back, or alternatively paint the whole car black. :D

I seen a red TT with black roof this afternoon, despite the doubters I think I may forge ahead with this. Would like to see a picture of it done on a car the same as mine before I take the plunge.

I'm thinking this way as I have an annoying small scuff on the roof, and a rust bubble that only I notice.

My roof is pretty shabby too, need to address it before it gets any worse. few other blemishes on bodywork get them sorted at the same time.
