I recently replaced the Tappets on my GR. I got the tappets off Camskill
and myself and my partner stuck in and done it ourselves. I found them very easy to replace and it only took us 2-3hrs. (Im a bit of a tom boy i know but its the only way to get to know your car by doing the work on it yourself)

A garage would probably charge silly money for replacing them but if you wouldnt be confident in doing them yourself you might be best leaving it in with a garage.

There is a few threads and links on cleaning the tappets but there basically the steps you'd use for replacing them.

If you need more info just let me know and if your thinking im just a girl and what would i know, I have done the tappets twice myself cleaned them 1st time round then I just ended up replacing them so I know how its done and how easy it is.

Guys, I have noise in the engine in the mornings as well it goes after a couple of seconds. I was always convinced it was tappets from reading all the posts but the mechanic at home insists it’s bearing noise not tappets and the engine is on the way out. How would you know the difference?

if it's tappets it will be a tapetty noise ! if its squeley then i bet its your water pump, when the car warms up it gradually gets quiter, also if the "mechanic" is correct, well then a "bearing" is on its way out, not the "engine"

I've heard sticky GR tappets on a few occasions, its sounds like a sewing machine on full song with a jingling bag of spanners thrown in for good measure. Re your mechanic, I suggest you get a second opinion.

I have the 2 engine heads off a GR engine sitting in my garage for the last fortnight, Sold the short block to a guy. Engine was perfect out of a GR with 40K on clock. Will let both heads go for €250. Included are all valves, camshafts etc. Worth buying as spares.

This link will give you a good idea of the work involved and what you need to do for replacing the tappets if you decide to do it yourself..

Paul Nolan did my tappets a few weeks ago.

The difference was amazing. Ever since I got the car (3 years ago) there was a tiny gap between putting your foot on the accelerator and the power coming from the engine. I assumed that this was the way that the engine worked but since the tappets were done the power is there instantly.

Also the engine is a lot quieter although it didn't make much of a tappety noise beforehand.
